What is the difference between the Reg steel used on the nimravus and The M2 model. I just love the knife, I don't claim to know about steel. Is ABC the cheapest on these knives?

The common ATS 34 is a fine stainless from the firm of Hitachi of Japan. M2 is a high speed tool steel with a higher carbon content. This in combo with its other elements make for a very hard steel. It can be honed to an extremely sharp edge and can hold it better under use than conventional stainless. They are however a bit more susceptible to corrosion/ rust since it is not very "stainless". Nothing an ocassional cleaning and lubing can' t solve. I think it' s a good tradeoff. The black coating helps as a protective measure.

i would personally go for a M2 model. ats-34 is listed at 1.05% carbon and no vanadium. M2 is listed at .85% carbon and 1.9% vanadium (i think). vanadium really adds to edge retention, so i'd opt for it. it will rust easier, but if you spend that kind of money on a knife, i trust that you'll take care of it.

The vanadium in M2 should also make the grain structure of the alloy finer and make it easier to get a razor edge.

I have the Nimravus Cub in M2. SWEET knife, and the steel really takes a fine edge. Pretty much perfect size, for me. I want a second in ATS-34, just for kicks, maybe satin-ized, as daily carry.

Incidentally, the steel chart that Spyderco has says that the M2 runs between 0.95 and 1.05% carbon.

the figures i gave were from memory off the ag russell chart. so by the spyderco chart, M2 would really kick butt. i'll have to go check my chart again and then slap my self upside the head to remember it.

Actually, the AG Russell did say 0.85% Carbon. Hmmm... but I rechecked the Spyderco Chart. And it says what I typed above. Oh well, between 0.85% and 1.05% Carbon anyone?
