Hey guys,

I read this article and was wondering if anyone could comment. Any idea on when the Paysan is coming out? ...And, is Spyderco Nirvana 2.0 a real thing?

Thanks!

It's my understanding that Spyderco is staying very tight lipped on when exactly models are being released until they absolutely are certain of a release date.

Additionally, I had no idea a Nirvana 2.0 was even in the works... I'm not sure I believe the article.

Paysan is set to be released sometime later this month. My preorder changed from no information to 6-16 days from shipping. I've not heard anything about a Nirvana 2.0 but given that they've basically been handed a template via customer complaints/requests, they would be fools not to. The Nirvana was very successful and an improved version would definitely sell. I'd buy one, for sure.

Good point. I think just a few tweaks and you could sell several more truckloads of nirvanas.

The Nirvana was very successful
Just curious, what’s your basis for this claim? My experience is the exact opposite and the Nirvana was largely a failure. I’m of the opinion the Nirvana was discontinued early in its run due to unsolvable lock stick in an unacceptable number of specimens. If you have evidence otherwise, I’d love to hear it.

I loved the look of the nirvana and would welcome a 2.0, but all the reviews I saw did mention a fair number of problems for a 400 dollar knife. I'd buy an improved version for sure.

I just tried to check on my preorder but BladeHQ apparently doesn’t give you the option to check that. My preorder is not even in my list of orders under my account. Lame. Should have preordered from knife center. Will going forward.

But on topic I have not seen anything about Nirvana 2 but would love one with improvements.

Shops here in Europe have the Paysan listed as June release. I doubt it will hit stores stateside before end of April.

I'm skeptical that these high priced Spydies will sell well. IMO, there is some serious competition from WE, Reate, etc. I wish 'em luck!

The Paysan looks like a $500 Griptilian.

I don't really "get" knives in this price range in general but I've seen super high end Chinese knives that at least looked interesting. The ones mentioned in this article just don't do it for me even if they were less expensive.

While I definitely recall all of the bad publicity I was under the impression that most of the issues were remedied by the later runs. Totally anecdotal and second hand.

Also, I often watch Shabazz and Frunkey, both of which carry a Nirvana. Which I'm sure has imprinted in my mind.

I could be wrong. Regardless, I am sure that a refined version would do well.

I love both designs, but I have to say it confuses me that Spyderco can't figure out how to do what others have known for years already, If you want a good integral get a WE or Reate, In fact I would be happier if one of these companies was doing the Rassenti colab. I hope that Spyderco nails the Pysan and at the price point it has to be perfect and there is no reason why it shouldn't be considering that everyone else can do it and for less.

Spyderco is using their skilled Taichung manufacturer. Most likely their costs are much higher than the mainland China manufacturers.
I love Taichung for some knives. But how much is the Paysan - about $500? I just bought a WE Drakon for $200 less and it's beautifully made.

This thread got me wondering about the timeline of Nirvana's existence. From a forum search it looks like they first began to hit stores in July/August of 2016. This thread seems to support that...

Then they were on the discontinued list presented on October 12 of 2017.

So a run of around 14 months; way shorter than I remember it being. I'd be willing to bet the actual production run at Taichung was much shorter in duration. Spyderco got to the point where they were simply destroying Nirvanas with severe lock stick and lock face spalling, so it's hard to picture it having been a profitable run. A lot will be riding on the success of the Paysan.

I will get it and if I don't care for it I will post on exchange pretty quick at a 15% discount and someone will have a shot at it for what it probably should be priced. I have come to think losing money for the sake of the knife community is my role in all this.

I briefly owned a Nirvana and thought it was disappointing especially for the price. Lockbar tension was too high and the saber grind was obtuse.
