I have a thing about the handles. Why do they ALL have the less attractive hex nut showing up on the exposed side? Any thoughts on this? I would like to look at smooth things instead of hex nuts

That’s what I love about the Beckers, so functional yet so utilitarian. Perfect platform to modify.I would suspect it is simply a cost thing, more than anything else.
Sure, a Loveless/Chicago bolt LOOKS nicer, but is somewhat more expensive than a plain ol' nut.
I don't mind it at all. I don't look at my Beckers as aesthetic works of art. The simple nut and bolt set up makes it super-easy to remove the grips for replacement or cleaning. And the way the nut is recessed into the nut-shaped scale cutout allows for easy tightening and re-assembly without fancy tools.
I did however, change to stainless hardware on most of my Beckers:
