Hi everyone!
I’m a hobbyist and just diving into the world of stainless (nitro v so far). I wanted to try stainless because anyone I give carbon knives to seems not to take care of it as well as they should and they end up tarnishing. However I do love the look of a brute de forge/forged finished knife. I also really like the acid etched and stone washed look. My issue of course is that these finishes are not easily achieved with stainless from what I can see. So my questions are:
Can I make some superficial forge marks on my blade and then quench in oil (so as not to have just dry scale) then anneal (soak 1350f and slow cool) and then foil wrap and heat treat as normal? Will doing this affect blade performance at all? Is there an easier way?
And
I’ve tried a test etch of my nitro v in ferric chloride and I couldn’t get it to darken much. It got a little bit grey but not what I’m looking for. I kept it in about a half hour checking and scrubbing periodically. Anyone know any tricks on darkening stainless so I can stone wash it? I know I can just use carbon steel but I want stone washed flats with polished steel bevels. I think gun blue might take but isn’t quite what I want. I know I’m picky lol.
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge!
