Greetings from Australia.Have just got in some Nitro V ,and was wondering what Rockwell hardness I should get it treated to. Usually work with 12C27 or 1095, and get these hardened to 58- 60 R. Should blades always be fully hardened or differentially hardened ? Any advise gratefully appreciated . Thanks in advance.

I would agree with the above, I have some blanks from Jarod in AEB-L that I had him heat treat to 63/64 for kitchen knives (2 nakiri's) and 61/62 for hunters. AEB-L and NitroV (very close in composition) should shine at these hardnesses from the research I've done.

I’ve had mine done at Paul Bos Heat Treat (Buck Knives)of both Steels at 60-61 for years and sell my Chef Knives to Papered Chefs & Home Cooks and they have all been extremely happy with sharpness & edge holding!

Thanks for responses. All my blades are treated at a heat treatment company. 250 miles from home, so everything i have to ask /tell the people down there is done on the phone.. Will get the nitro v done at 60 R ,and see how it goes ... Thanks again.

We can push both quite high in the hardness it just depends on what the customer wants. Every once in awhile I get an odd request for a low number. I will contact them and Healy get the “I did not know what was a good hardness”. I then will heat treat to what I feel is appropriate for the blade.

You need to be able to tell them more than just the target hardness. There is no up-to-date datasheet for Nitro-V and they need to know temperature ranges, etc. Unless they have already heat treated the steel before.

Thanks Larrin, What other information should I give ? I haven't sent any Nitro off yet , and presumed ( wrongly perhaps) that they would know what to do with them if I told them what Rockwell I wanted. Any more info gratefully appreciated. Thanks

You will need to call them and ask if they have heat treated it before and if not you can provide them this information:

Thanks Larrin ,will forward the fact sheets to treater for reference if he hasn't done N v before. Thanks again for the great advice I get from you guys in the US of A. Cheers from Down Under!!
