From a tip by Wayne Goddard in Blade Magazine, I found there is a company called NitroVan that offers vanadium-carbonitride briquets that when added to molten steel can improve strength and reduce grainsize. This sort of reminds me of all the debate over INFI a few years ago. Another industrial publication said nitrogen improves wear and strength, but compromise toughness and ductibility. I wonder if this is noticible in knife form.

I must be tired, I went to that website and the whole thing looked like it was written in hebrew or something :D I guess I am not cut out for semi-technical reading with only about 3 hours sleep in the last 3 days :D
 
It sounds interesting, thought I noticed it often said low-alloy steel. Don't knifemakers use High alloy steel?
