hey everyone....long time reader of bladeforums....i don't really post too much but i had an alarming conversation with a knife maker......i am having a dagger made and i sent him a deposit.....he called me and said it might be illegal for him to ship it to new jersey.....he is in arizona .....why would it be illegal to mail it....i can see carrying a dagger on the street....i am gonna put it on display in my house.....should i be worried about somebody stopping the package along the way....are there any laws anybody is aware of....thank you so much....ryan

First of all, it's not his problem, it's yours. And it's only a problem for you if you carry it. As a collector's item, it's fine. The restrictions on shipping apply to autos, since the law on that is Federal.

I have heard of manufacturers and catalog dealers getting hassled by state prosecutors as a way of keeping them from advertising and shipping items that the particular prosecutor wants to keep out. But an individual maker doesn't fall in that category, and New Jersey is not a particularly restrictive state for knives, anyway.

Remember that USPS will ask if a package contains anything hazardous, and a properly secured, wrapped, sheathed blade is not hazardous. "Cutlery." :D

Postal Clerk: Does your package contain anything that's fragile, liquid, potentially hazardous or parishable?
My usual reply: No sir (or mam if it's a woman).

Of course I'm not mailing anything that's prohibited and it never usually goes beyond that. In when I sent a knife back to SABI (Vic importer) for repair/replacement it said knife on the package, and there was never even a second thought.

USPS classifies knives (except autos and gravity) right along with tools. The blade just needs to be covered in a manner that prevents it from penetrating the package.

thanks for all the info....by the way it's a dagger from tai goo....hehe ....can't wait.....thanks again....ryan

it's a dagger from tai goo
Oh, now THAT might be a problem! Why don't you have him send it to me first so I can reassure the Postal Service that it's all right! :D

Yep, I just had a Busse AK-47 short sword shipped to me in Jersey last summer via the USPS. No problems, other than it took too long (I hate waiting for new toys).
