I plan to order quite a bit, since I am in Europe and want to save on shipping.
They have an option, to have the steel wide belt ground by them. Is this something I should consider? Is the ordinary finish from the mill horrible?

the mill scale on the 3V I got is pretty nasty, but so is the knife I'm making it out of. Unless you plan on integrated the mill scale into the finished knife, you might want to consider having it ground in advance, probably cheaper to pay them to do it than to do it yourself

Thanks. I don't mind that look, on some knives. Maybe I'll pick up a little of both then.
You don't happen to have a photo of it?

Not sure if 3V mill scale is any worse than other PM steels. I am to cheap to have someone else grind off scale. With surface grinder it is not much of an issue.

I like precision ground for two reasons. One, it is clean and square from the get go. Second, depending on the source, after I clean up a piece of steel, it can still be significantly oversized. Then I either have to keep grinding, or adjust the design.

Belt ground is not flat ground or precision ground. Most belt ground finishes are +.010" across 12".

We get a significant amount of belt ground sheets. We have all the belt ground sheets flat ground on a Blanchard grinder to +-.001" across 12".

Is there any money saving in ordering more in quantity? I would be in for couple of bars, if you don't mind the hassle and we could split the shipping.

Hey Chuck, going to be ordering some more sometime this winter, am I understanding right, all your CPM steels come with the scale ground off?

The list of alloys we have flat ground includes the CPM alloys, Bohler Uddeholm PM alloys, Zapp alloys, Talonite and a few random pieces of simple steel.

The steel is ground until all the mill finish and divots are removed. The divots are the most frustrating. We will sometime cut around or through a divot to keep from grinding the entire sheet down.
