I have a CG NMSFNO with a coated convex blade. Is the edge from the factory convex sharpened or V grind; it's hard to tell? Also, if it is convex, can I sharpen it as a V Grind? What do most do?

I bought my CG NMSFNO used so this is from what I can tell on mine. It was stripped, but it looks like the original convex edge, or someone did an amazing job on it. I change all my edges to convex. Very few of my knives have a V edge anymore.

I could be wrong, and I'm a rookie too for the record, but I thought they all have a V grind setup. If there is a convex grind or edge to the blade, that may have been done after. From the SFNO's that I own, they have V grind. I actually just asked a similar ? to a very nice seller, that explained to me that the SFNO's were V grind from the shop. Maybe someone that knows a lot more then I do, will chime in. :)

I bought a used FFBM with a convex edge and re-sharpened it to a V grind. I think a V grind is much easier to sharpen and better for slicing. Convex is usually better for chopping because the knife is not suppose to bind as easy as a V grind but what do you do more chop or slice? I think most of the work we do is slicing or light chopping (splitting wood not building a cabin). I prefer a V grind for in the field because it is easier for me to maintain.I never could quite sharpen a convex edge the way I wanted to it was just never sharp enough when I got done.

I believe they are convex grind with a V edge.

A slight v-grind.

When my NMSFNO was new it had a half convex half v grind if that makes any sense.

But, I made it full blown convex

My NMSFNO + NMFBM came new with saber grinds, but the slope of the blades are basically convex with "V" grind (secondary bevel) close to edge.
I immediately reprofiled to full convex...chop chop

Saber grinds? On those?

We need pics, lots of pics :)

My CG NMSFNO had a convex blade profile (.22wide) with a small V grind on the edge.
I had the edge changed to full convex to blend with the rest of the blade at it's sweet.

I'm debating stripping it now... but the green blade & tan handshaped grips go so well together...I just can't do it yet.

I'm still a convex sharpening newb, but I think convex edges are easier to maintain than Vs

Well, I'm hearing convex edge, V, and combo convex V? I couldn't tell what mine was but it does look like a V that blends into the convex blade. Anyway, I'm not a convex kind of a guy. If I'm in the field, I can always sharpen a V, but that's me. Also, convex sharpening tends to mark up the entire blade, in my case the crinkle finish. I put a 20 degree V grind on it with my Spyderco sharpener. Started with diamond sticks to establish the profile. While it was a good amount of work, the 20 degree angle was very close to what was there so it did not take that much re-profiling. Went to the brown sticks for a while and did the final polishing with the whites. The edge looks polished and is hair popping sharp, choil to tip! I'm happy with it. It's also an edge I can touch up and maintain.
