Greetings all,
I have been undergoing a little bit of an evolution on my NMSFNO 'Go' rig. Previously I had an older SpecOps sheath...the one with the zippered pouch pocket and the buckle. A serviceable sheath no doubt, but all in all the buckle was extra bulk that I didn't need, and the pouch w/ zipper didn't maximize the storage. But its a decent sheath, probably superior in the security dept. if you're jumping out of airplanes or something, and was what came with the knife from the previous owner. See first photo.
So I swapped over to a newer style SpecOps...one of the more current variants. See 2nd/3rd photos. It's alot simplier (just velco closure) and the pouch offers a good bit more capacity. Shown with most of what I currently have set up to go, tho the folder which switch out if the situational called for it. There's a *little* room left in the pouch for perhaps a small folded map of the area you're in, some water purification tablets, or maybe some line and a hook or similar. But not much.
So whatcha got is:
- NMSFNO
- SpecOps Sheath
- Victorinox Folder (forget the model, but its got the tweezers and toothpick + the 4 blades/tools)
- Bic Lighter
- Firesteel with striker (will probably swap the striker lanyard over to blaze orange next time I think of it)
- MultiGadget (actually alot of items in one gizmo...compass, whistle, light, thermometer, magnifying glass, and mirror)
- Space blanket
- Nylon Strap I rigged up for carry if I decide not to put on my belt.
I know there's some redundancy with the lighter/fire rod, but in reality...a spark is good, a flame is better. If you really need fire, its handy to have a lighter. If for some reason it goes down or the weather won't allow the lighter, you've got the firesteel as backup. Why make life harder if you don't have too?
Normally if I am going out more than a short stroll by the river, I have versipak rigged up for getting through a night or three in the woods if it became necessary. Not in hotel room comfort, but I'd survive unless it got really bad/cold. That would be nice to have. But if for some reason I don't have it, or I get separated from it, this set up should greatly increase my odds should the brown stinky stuff hit the electric wind generator and I find myself stuck in the elements on an unscheduled situation. It's set up and ready to go...throw it on, out the vehicle and down the trail. Not too shabby for an off the shelf rig.
Just thought I'd share.
And besides, those of us who can't make it to Blade, we gotta do something, right???
Cheers,
BOSS
