NMSFNO Takes On Some Kin

I did a little informal chop-off today with six of my made in Wauseon mid-sized choppers. It wasn't scientific, just a little fun on this Spring-like day. All these blades have convex edges, some more radical than others, so this chop-off isn't necessarily representative of what others may get in their comparisons. Top to bottom are the Busse NMSFNO, Swamp Rat Ratweiler, SR Chopweiler, Busse Sarsquatch CE, Scrap Yard SODLE, and SR Camp Tramp.

I used some pine limbs for chopping. I did two chop throughs with each knife, trying my best to make sure each knife had to chop through the same total amount of wood.

The NMSFNO did best, with 25 average chops.

Second best was a huge surprise. The lightest and shortest one here, the Camp Tramp took just 28 chops on average.
That full convex edge I put on it might explain it. I just don't know. But I got what I got.

The mighty Ratweiler, which beat the CT last time came in third with 30 average chops.

The SODLE and Chopweiler both averaged 35 chops.

And my Sarsquatch CE took 38 average chops.

I know, the order could have changed on the next log, but now I do know that the new NMSFNO chops about as well as the Ratweiler, which usually kicks butt.
Now to clean up all that pine sap. At least I didn't waste a beautiful day! :D

Nice comparison and good info, thanks. I thought the NMSFNO might be a decent chopper.

Yes, it is a fine chopper. That new coating seems durable, too. I was able to scrub off the wood and sap with a Scotbrite pad and some alcohol. It came out pretty good.

The NMSFNO looks like a pretty good performer. Is it the longest blade of the bunch?

Good comparison, thanks.

Good Review, Horn Dog. I'm not a big fan of the appearance of Busse knives, except the Active Duty and the Badger Attack, but I have to say I really like the looks of the Sarsquatch CE. Do you have any specs for it?

Thanks,

Doc

It is 3/16" thick with a 7" blade. It is fairly light for a full tang knife. I forget exactly what the weight was. The Sarsquatch is still a great camp knife, even if some of these others will out chop it a little.

Nice review and pics, Horn Dog. The NMSFNO is a good all-around performer in my opinion: chops more than decently enough, but isn't too heavy. Which is why it's now my favourite Busse to carry with me outdoors. :) Then my usual question: how thick is your NMSFNO sample? I should think it would chop better the thicker it is, and there seems to be the usual variation. Mine is around .23" thick (if my memory serves me correctly) and chops pretty impressively. If someone out there has a .25" + NMSFNO, it'll probably chop a little bit better still.

Nice comparison, I have been want a big/midsized knife and the NMSFNO is a good looking knife to me, you may have sold me on it.

Is that the sage finish? Thanks. Pat

Yes, sage with black machined micarta magnum scales. I like the sage, but it tends to blend in and is hard to find. I may put a gawdy bright lanyard on it.

Mine is at 0.241". It is nice to see that they seem to out perform the ratweiler which has a reputation of being an excellent chopper. It is nice that I can get a NMSFNO for less that I can a ratweiler.
