Okay, I caved and ordered a NMSFNO from the Skunkster over at the Company Store. The 8" blade length got me. I figured this should make a decent chopper. It arrived in hand within a couple days.
Even though Ol' Skunky is only a few hundred miles east of Rok Central, I was mightily impressed that it got here so fast. Someone must have confiscated his stash of SSMFADEL (Skunkomatic Single-Malt Firewater And Diesel Engine Lubricant) with the condition that he wouldn't get so much as a dram of it until all the Co Store orders were shipped. Sobriety can do terrible damage to a person -- like imposing efficiency and organization on that stubbly-faced rapscallion who spends his days rummaging and rampaging around the Store pretending he's got important work to do beyond insuring that all the secretly stashed bottles of Liquid Salvation are indeed drained to the last drop. Nonetheless, a terrible terrible punishment to inflict on the Skunkster. However, as the beneficiary of that efficiency, I dare not squawk about Mr Skunk having to suffer such degradation in the service of his Hog brethren.
Anywhooo, this afternoon between spits and spats of drizzly rain I took the NMSFNO out to bust up some more of the windfall fir branches that threaten to overwhelm our yard. I was right in guessing that the sage-and-tan NMSFNO would be a righteous chopper. It worked mighty well for stripping off the small twigs zipper-style down the length of the branches, as well as segmenting up the branches themselves. The blade length, thickness, and spine-to-edge width provides a nice bit of mass and inertia while chopping. Nonetheless, I found that choking way back on the handle (pinky hanging off the end of the handle butt) provided better penetration with each stroke than holding the knife hammer-handed with my hand fully seated on the handle.
Because I know you Hogs like pics and "No Pics, Didn't Happen" is the rule around here, below are some links to Photobucket.com shots of the NMSFNO hanging out in one of the trees that donated raw material for the chop-o-matic branch-bustin' fun, some of the results (note the NMSFNO hanging on the front of the pile), and the knife all cleaned up after the chopping session.
Enjoy amigos!!!
... And many thanks to the Skunkster for the super-quick delivery.
