A wharncliff blade being a rope-cutting blade, one thing led to another. If it was a rope-cutting knife it should have rope filework, hense my earlier posts. And it should have a marlinspike for opening knots.

Even though this is probably my best piece of workmanship (sorry for the poor photos, I'll keep trying), the knife has been universally dissed by my regular circle of critics, mostly on design grounds. So it goes. Since this one probably won't sell, I guess I'll be stuck with it myself... :p

Stats:

440C, Cryoquenched

OAL 10 3/4", blade 6"

Rope filework (thanks everyone for the help), tapered tang, black and red liners

Nickel Silver pins, Macassar ebony scales

Marlinspike out of 304 stainless

Includes clunky sheath

Dave

PS - If I ever suggest I might put 39 pins through a tapered tang again, please disuade me!

Dave,

It looks good to me. Why do you think it won't sell? I've had some that were so odd ball in shape I didn't think I could give them away, and they would be the first to sell at a knife show. That knife looks like it would make a good slicer. You should have put in 1 more pin.

Bill

I have never been a follower or taken with people who are. I really like it Dave, it flows from the point to the end of the scales. Only thing that could of made it better, and you took care of that, the spike. Some really nice work.

I think that looks great, Dave! Like Bill, I can't imagine that one not selling. Looks like a very comfortable handle. Also looks like a great job shaping that marlinspike, very nice.:)

Dave, That is one good lookin knife! The pins are cool and go well with the style of handle and blade shape. I like knife sets too.

Dave, I agree. No one would EVER buy that knife. Best just save yourself the trip to the dump and mail it to me [I will reimburse for the postage] and I will take care of it for you.

That is one SWEET knife, and I love the design.

But then what do I know- I even like the pictues!

Good job on a very nice knife!

Dave

Wow, that knife flows perfectly! What do you mean about the looks??? And besides, all the rope cutting knives I've seen were butt ugly...you're waaaay ahead of the game.

Thanks for posting, that's sharp!

Nick

looks great to me and remenber that crowd of nay sayers think that any thing that is not a copy of a loveless drop point just won't sell. well HA, dare to be differnt. their are lots of buyers that love something new. i know this because i make my living selling differnt knives than the staus quo! good work i love the streamline look of the piece:p

Dave,
Very nice knife, fine sheath and the best looking marlin spike I've ever seen. Great package.
Regards, Greg

Dave,

I've never been a huge fan of wharncliff blades, but that is one sweet knife! Great design, love the pins (though it does look 1 short;) ). Very nice sheath. A very well put together package, it'll sell.

Patrick

That is some sweet work. I like all the pins!
The knife and the marlin spike look good together but I'd probably wear them seperatly. That spike looks pretty mean just by itself.
That combo will sell. I don't know who your critics are, but take what they say with a grain of salt.

Wow, what a nice refrain to wake up to! Thanks for all the kind words, gents. I put way too many hours in this one, but it made me feel good and that's why I do this anyway. I sure didn't expect your generosity though! :) Thank you very much.

I just cannot figure out where that last pin went...

Dave

She looks like a beauty to me....
Let me tell you what to say to the nay sayers...Thanks! that will be the first one I sell at the next show!..
Whenever Donna tells me I made a ugly or weierd knife that is what I would say and it was always the first to go..
That knife of yours is far from ugly and has really clean lines. And the pin work looks great! If you want to mess with someone tell them there are 40 pins and watch them count them over and over again then say I don't know what happened to that last pin I know I put it in there somewhere:D (just kidding) I love doing the pin work and mine never come out on even numbers either. If you think 39 was bad try 150 studs with just a few of those being key ones that went all the way through. That was fun..
Great job!,
Bruce

I don't understand why you think it won't sell. It's well shaped, great flow, beautiful workmanship and the sheath is good. The marlinspike tops it off perfectly.

Great Work. Its really a nice lloking knife and seems like its very usable too.
I'm not a huge fan of wharncliffs but that one looks great.
I'd like to see another one with those same lines only the blade flipped over so it was a more of a really long clip or drop point
Nice job with the filework too.

Thanks for all the kind words, makes my day. I won't be too broken hearted if I "have" to keep this one... :D

mikeS, I gave up the nautical theme when one of the "dissers" explained that no one on a boat would willingly put a sharp point near a sail, and that I had not provided a shackle key to go with the set. So now I have a new project, somewhere down the line!

Thanks again for all the help and support. Wish I had more to offer, mostly still learning.

Dave

Dave, you've got the hands of an artist and the soul of a poet! Lovely workmanship all around....:D

Peter, you :o :o :o me! Whew. But it's nice to hear too, because I thought business school took all the poetry outta me. Some days I really regret what I studied in college, I should've learned to make stuff. Then my profession would provide some sense of giving lasting value to the world. But what I do for a living has absolutely no physical impact on the world at all. And it ain't pretty, either.

I'm just counting down to retirement when I'll have the option of working on knives every day! Or sitting on the porch reading with my wife. Maybe she'll make pots again. Hey, I'm a dreamer too!

Well, I'm going to a local gun show to try to sell this knife, wish me luck and have a great day.

Dave
