This isn't quite finished yet, I have to make the sheath and put an edge on this one but it's been so long since I finished anything I thought I'd put this out there.
Scagel's knives have always just blown me away. This is not meant to be "like" a Scagle knife, just a nod to his influence. It's kind of a crossover between one of his camp knives and my 70s custom knife roots.
I tried to interpret some of Scagel's details for this pattern. The guard is flaired just a bit at its leading edge but it's more subdued than on Scagel's guard and the edge is sharper. Scagel's guards are almost organic, this one is more 'mechanical.' Scagel rarely had what we'd call a plunge, this has a very soft one. And of course, I used wood instead of an antler crown for the handle. The blade is convex ground and this is the first time I managed to get it close to the way I wanted. Rob Frink's rotary platen is a wonderful tool, one of those things I just don't know how I ever lived without. After several years I'm just beginning to learn how to use it.
I've made this pattern twice before but this time I almost got it the way I intended - almost...
The pics highlighted a few things I still need to tweak. Good thing, I'd hate to send this away with anything "off" that I could fix! But I wouldn't have noticed without taking the pictures. I probably should have done that before I posted this but I'd rather sit here than work in the shop this morning.

Anyway, here are the specs:
Overall Length: 12"
Blade Length: 6 3/4"
Blade Steel: O1
Guard: Aluminum Bronze
Handle: Brass, Copper, Leather, Black & White Fiber, stabilized Tasmanian Myrtle (from my Australian friend Reg Ellery), Mosaic Pins
Hope you like it, I appreciate any suggestions for future renditions of this one. I know I have a long way to go.
