How much value does the knife lose without the birth card?? The knife in question is a very good condition small regular sebenza with BG42 blade that still has the factory edge from 2000.

All depends on the buyer. Its obviously worth more With the BD Card. Not having it does drop the value, but as to how much, its anyones guess.

My point of view is that the box and card completes the knife. I have bought one without box or card and paid below current prices of the new ones, bought one without the card and paid current prices which for both to me was fair. What I've learned is that unless the card is with the knife to identify everything about the knife, the knife will have to be taken apart to verify the steel.

It will probably drop the number of potential buyers down, but I definitely wouldn't pay less for a Seb without a bday card. The card doesn't add anything for me.

I feel the same way about the box or cloth.

I would probably not buy a crk without the birthday card. If you are thinking of selling, I would send it to crk to get it confirmed and issued another card and box.

It's hard to say, especially if the knife has collector value like the BG42 Sebenzas. Personally, I'll pay a premium if all the original parts and pieces are offered, but there is still a very healthy aftermarket for those knives - card or no card.

On something like that I would say probably 30% of the value. To me it really isn't a collectors item without the birth cert.

From what I understand you have a desirable piece, which catches a premium if NIB (mint).
So probably it pays to get the box and b-day card, as stated above.

That's my hunch. Smaller number of potential buyers, slower sale, but probably not much less money in the end.

I'd say as price and rarity go up, probably the card and other bits become more important to potential buyers. For a user, I don't think it matters too much but on the other hand it provides some reassurance that the knife is all kosher (if one does not know the seller).

I would certainly discount it just like any other flaw from the maximum I would pay for NIB with everything. The hard ? then becomes discounted from what $ amount. These days prices are trending to the high side, so it could be still a very substantial amount . The buyer also may not feel as I do and not really care if it is missing, that would be up to them to decide. The choice of buying it at all would come down to how much I wanted it ,if I planned to use it or collect it and if I ever thought I might be selling it in the future(I buy some just to check them out and decide if they are keepers), as well as if I thought I could find one that was complete at some time(some are once in a lifetime or could be many years until the next).
That's my 2 cents
