No birthday card rule

I had the best intentions collecting, telling myself that I would only buy CRK's with proper documentation, a birthday card.
I have now made 3 exceptions. I have no doubt to the authenticity of any of them, each is quite unique and rare, and all are mint.
Would lack of BD card prevent you from owning any of these?

I don't have any CRK's yet..... But I try to stick to the following when buying knives.

If the knife is going to be a collector (which these look to be/I hope so) then I definitely would want a COA.
If the knife is going to be a user, I could care less about paperwork as long as I know it is genuine.

So would I buy these if given the opportunity, yes but the price would have to be right since it doesn't have a birthday card.

Yum.....No I'd buy them all in a Heartbeat..... Its like having a Ferrari without the original engine..at the end of the day its still a Ferrari

#1 was expensive but I feel like I basically stole #2 & #3. There is a COA for #2 but it's not the original BD card. #1 made me really nervous until I had it in hand, got it of the bay from someone with ZERO feedback. It was like playing in Vegas :p

Thing is there is a difference between BD card & COA. I have no doubt I can recoup my $ without COA but I am also sure CRK would give me a COA on them if I sent them in. It would probably be worth the trouble, hmm...

I think with any product that has clones/fakes being made of it the box, docs, etc bring a little piece of mind while shelling out several hundreds of dollars.

Having said that, I would've made the exception for those aswell:thumbup:

Those are great knives, card or no card:thumbup:

The birthday cards are nice to have, but it wouldn't stop me from buying the knife I wanted. Also, if I was going to make it a user I wouldn't care if it hard a card. I do think one with no card should be sold with a slight discount.

The two Sebenzas posted here are not really my cup of T.

But that Syringa/River Of Fire Mnandi, why yes, I would buy that, birthday card or not!

Kind regards,

Jos

A great knife is a great knife, regardless of documentation. If you have the chance to procure a specimen that it particularly winsome to you for a good price, then go for it. I certainly have. However, in terms of pure collectibility and possible escalation of value, having the correct box and birth card are vital (IMO). My experience has been that for older items, this is even more important.

I try to only buy from dealers as I've had a few previous transactions where the seller claim that the item is "new in box". However, for those three, I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

Wouldn't stop me from making the same decision you did! Wow, what beauties those first two are and fantastic photos to boot. That blue damascus is rediculously beautiful. Sebenza means "worker" and by no means would a small piece of paper hold one back to put it to its original purpose. Thanks for sharing

This small UG's birthday card and box are somewhere in the twilight zone, but I didn't hesitate to snatch it when I finally caught up to it. That took a few tries as it made the rounds through the usual suspects here. The only provenance that reamains is an email from Anne confirming that Chris did the graphics on this one himself. I never say never, but I can't imagine getting rid of this one.

No birthday cards have ever stopped me. I just make sure the slabs are the same date.:))))))))))))))

Lol, well not exactly the same. The engine is an actual functioning part of the car.... birthday card serves no purpose other than reassurance really (and maybe resale value).

Thanks, sometimes you have to play to win :)

You definitely won.
While that blue damascus is ridiculous, I think the Mnandi's my favorite of the three. The blade looks like a peacock tail and the handle looks like leather. Pretty flippin' sweet.

I landed the Mnandi for the damascus and rarity but the inlay is fantastic as well.
