I've seen others remove the black paint from their clips so I decided to give it a try. Maybe black is nicer on knives with black blades, but I like the clips in their bare metal glory. I used 320 grit to start off then some finer paper, then my wire brush on my bench grinder and finally 0000 steel wool. Didn't want it mirror, but more of a brushed look. I can say that the paint Spyderco uses was twice as tough as the BM.

would a chemical soak have saved you some time and effort?

Depends on what chemicals. I did try some really strong paint stripper and let it soak for about 15 minutes. The only effect it had on the spydie was barely making it feel like satin. Sure would be easier than sanding!

Did you use 0000 steel wool on both? Like the finish may try that on one of mine!

That's a really nice finish.

I find it best to do everything by hand, starting off with some 120 grit sand paper in a circular pattern. When I get up to 600 I start doing long even strokes all the way down the clip. I normally stop at 1000 or 1200 depending on how finished I want it to be.

What really finished it off nice was the wire wheel on my grinder. I was surprised how well it took out the sanding scratches leaving a nice brushed finish. The steel wool was just for a little sheen. I like the look a lot better than black as scratches don't really show and I can touch them up any time. I haven't cared about being stealth in the bush since I retired from the Corps!
