No Choil CG Boss Jack owners - grind question

I was fondling the new choil-less Boss Jack the other day, and something caught my eye. It looked as if the blade width flared out, right about where the choil would be ground out. I took out the calipers to see if it was just an illusion, and confirmed that the blade width really does swell from 1.265" or so, to about 1.305", in the last inch of edge right before the talon hole.

It's nothing that would affect performance in any way that I can think of. In fact, combined with the taper at the tip, it actually gives the blade a very subtle recurve effect. Kind of neat!

My only other Jack experience was with a large-choil, which I have since traded out, but to the best of my recollection that edge was dead straight from the taper, back to the choil.

I was just curious if this is common in the no-choil versions, or if I have something a little "special".

Thanks,

There was a very slight recurve on some cabs as well. It's a result of the convexing process from what i understand.

It is very tough to get that grind right up to the Talon hole (Guard) are. If you take the grind right up to the guard, you will mess up guard.

That's why I don't care for the choil-less models. I know it's hard to grind a primary bevel and add an edge bevel when there's no sharpening notch, much less a small or large choil. I see the recurve only getting worse over time unless you add your own sharpening notch.

I just checked my CABS with a straight edge, and found no recurve on the blade at all. However, there is a taper to the straight section, from base to the beginning of the sweep to the point! From 1.180" near the base, to 1.040" where the blade begins to sweep. No recurve at all though! I love it!:thumbup:

Interesting discussion...maybe my eyes, but how I've seen on comparison pics of choilless and "choiled" protos, there is a difference in the plunge line and the ricasso, also.

so, maybe adding a custom choil to a ch-less model produces a different knife from the one with a choil even if the choil sizes are identical....uh quite a few choils in this sentence...:)

....it was a headache for me what to order...and I went with the choilless model...but I'm still not sure...:foot:
