Hey I'm new to learning about knives, but I'm really interested in them and would like to learn more.

I've got a few knives now, but they're all cheap. All about 20-25 bucks. I fish alot and would like to have one or two knives that I can depend on and will stay sharp for a good amount of time. However, I don't want to spend a whole lot of money. Nothing over 50 dollars if possible.

I don't know what qualities to look for in a knife so could someone help me out with recommending a good solid knife. One that is good for day to day tasks and is good for fishing conditions.

Thanks yall!

you want at minimum a good stainless steel. the salt series from spyderco is actually rust-proof.

are you looking for a folder or fixed blade?

If you don't already have one a sharpener is also a good investment, no knife will stay sharp forever.
Anything in H1 should work for a low maintainance fishing knife.

With a budget of $50 it might be hard to find what you are looking for, unless your allowing 50 for each knife. Spyderco delica or similar salt model and a Mora filet knife would be a good start.

A folder, but I definitely wouldn't mind having a fixed blade.
An yeah 50 bucks a piece not for the two combined.

I keep a Cold Steel RoachBelly in my tackelbox along with a Leatherman Kick:thumbup: So far that combo has been perfect for me  You could get both of these togather for $50 or less ;)

For the Fixed blade, Mora knives work great! Only going to cost you about 10-15 bucks. Most people will agree that they are very high value knives. Here is a picture of one model they make -I thought it would be a good all around fishing knife (they make fillet knives too):

You might also like the Buck vantage pro for a folder. It has way better edge retention than the Spydercos with H1 steel and is still resistant to rust (not as much though). It uses S30V steel -which is very good. I think it is one of the most inexpensive knives in S30V at around 40-45 bucks online.

Marttinii filet knife - Wally world <$20
Cold Steel Bushman - $25
They should make a good pair and you should be able to get both for $50

+1
Thats exactly what I was thinking

I fish a lot. The Mora clipper in stainless steel works very well. An Old timer Sharpfinger is a good choice. I like a sharp pointy blade for cutting mono, especially the tag line of a knot. Also a fixed blade so it can be deployed one handed while your other hand is busy holding a fish,rod... A fillet knife is for filleting, I dont like it for fishing though. You will want to be able to cut rope, make forked rod holders ,cut branches out of the way...

nice to meet you rebel angler! ;)

I would also agree on a Mora. Lot of us really like em around here, Inexpensive, good design,
very easy to sharpen, not pretty or fancy but they do the job and more. You drop it in the water,
no big deal!

many models to choose from, I'd suggest stainless and get a couple for 50!
http://www.ragweedforge.com/ is one place to look.

Good Luck and Good Fishing.

If you dont fish in saltwater most any stainless is stainless enough. If I should pick and had 100 $ inalles I would start with mora clipper and Case yellow trapper or sodbuster alternativ, Spyderco Delica for a backlock and a good diamond stone preferably fallkniven DC3.

Since you fish, I would also strongly suggest something from Spyderco's Salt Series.
