Mike,Spark,Steve:
As a newcomer and "consumer" to this forum, I decided to read all the threads on the current issue concerning the tests of the ATAK.
I don't own a Busse or Mad Dog. Whether the tests conducted were fair and unbiased is for the readers to conclude. (I would think that a REAL ATAK should be tested if the previous tests were considered "blurred" by the proponents.
What does bother me (as a consumer)is the integrity issue. I've never met any of the folks on the forums, hence, I try to research any potential purchase by reading as much as I can. In my view...
The real owner of the tested ATAK is entitled to a replacement from MAD DOG. Proof of purchase (according to MD's warranty)is required. I would see no problem, but, I don't think I could come up with a receipt for a knife I purchased 8 years ago. I save them now, but I didn't then.
2) I would think from a public relations point of view that if a maker concedes that there is a fake that has surfaced (for all to see), then if I was the maker, I would just send the owner a new knife. (appears the problem could be that there may have been a significant number of fakes that made it out the door) If everyone x-rayed their knifes, there could be a precident set here. It could be rather costly! But what price do you makers put on the integrity of your product? I don't know for sure, but if some of the prominent custom makers on this forum were faced with a similar situation, I'll bet they would suck it up and send a new knife to get the conversation nipped in the bud (regardless how the knife got out).
3)Mad Dog doesn't have to see it my way. He makes 'em and guys like me buy 'em. (Maybe) This knife could be the the ultimate dream, but if I couldn't trust the integrity of the maker after he knows of fakes upon the marketplace, why should I believe his claims of what his knife can do?(regardless of who tests his knifes--The SEALS or Turber) THERE IS NO PERFECT KNIFE--but there are people showing integrity that attempt to right wrongs (whether they committed them or not--as long as their name was attached to it).
You fellas can do as you like. In my view INTEGRITY is the issue, not the test. I would refer all to the slogan of Spyderco.
Whether the owner of the knife gets a new one or not, whether it comes from an authorized dealer or the manufacturer....THIS IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR A PUBLIC RELATIONS COUP` OR DISASTER. Will the real gentleman step up?
