.., like and old one, lol.
Swore I’d stay away from the “supersteels”, but here I am looking at M390/cpm20cv and S90V. This should be a hoot!

I too have been considering a "super steel" ever since my disappointment with 8670 at a zero edge (not that it's a bad steel, I still love it). I've been thinking about either Nitro V or CPM 3V, not that either of those are anywhere near similar...

Wait a month or two and get the Magnacut from NSM or one of the suppliers. It has great promise.
That “great promise”, is what has piqued my interest!
Also, a few weeks of swearing at the S90V and throwing crap around the shop will be a good prep to receive the MagnaCut, making it seem easy-peasy in comparison.

I just made a small knife out of cpm 3v. It was a pleasure to work with.

There is apparently one bar of MagnaCut at NSM, 1/4x3x~36. I have been tempted to buy it several times to make a couple of Gregory style whackers. My friend's video of that thing in use has stuck in my head permanently.
I have probably 300 pounds of steel here already that I'll never use up. Doesn't stop my interest in the new stuff and how it HTs, apparently.
It is a sickness, I'm afraid. Steel GAS. That sounds painful.

I'm trying to puzzle out the acronym. S = syndrome, since you mention sickness? But what about G and A? Maybe A for acquisition and G for gear or gadget? Or maybe something else altogether?

It stands for "Gear Acquisition Syndrome", usually mentioned when speaking of our penchant for lots of stuff in musicians' circles. It applies to knifemaking quite well, I feel.

My brother is a musician. I know that one pretty well, and yes, it does work here. 8670 is good (plenty good), but could there be more??

Learned something new, don't think I've ever seen or heard this before. I wonder if I might be suffering from GAS myself, I ordered an anvil yesterday for no particular reason...

You and me both! I just ordered an anvil last week. I'm telling looking forward to it! Getting a 250 Fontanini! Man I'm stoked!!

An anvil is a good thing to have! My forging days may be long gone, but there'll still be a 108 (116lb) Peter Wright out there when I go.

Next you'll be wanting a 'smithing hammer, just to kinda sorta hold and get a feel for what those other guys are doing. Yeah, that's the ticket!! GAS

Knifemaker gas? Every kind of steel, every new belt, 300 files, even more drill bits, cool stuff and more cool stuff. Handle material may be one of the worst. Lots of opportunity in the knife shop. Oh, and don't forget to add Damascus and eventually engraving. Lotsa GAS. Oops, need a welder, too, don't forget.

We'll help you spend your money, fear not, sir! :)

Don't worry, I'm not going to fall into the GAS trap. The only thing I really need for this hobby is a little hardness tester, and maybe a hammer and some new belts would be nice, now that you mention it. You can't really count the Foredom, I've been meaning to buy one for years, just been waiting for the Dremel to die and it's on its last leg, so I think I should get something new soon. Wood and steel are just consumables anyway, so that does not really count either. And I don't think it would be fair to call it GAS if I got a little press or something as a Christmas present from my wife. See, I told you, I totally have it under control. I'd love to explain it some more, but I got to go watch some videos about surface grinding attachments, I wonder what they're all about.

I am relieved you have it under control, sir. My wife has bought me quite a bit of stuff, too.;)

PS Why buy a regular old Foredom when you can spend a lot more on a micro-motor hand piece and controller? Nahhh, you need both, of course. And a high speed air driven handpiece from a GRS engraving system. And a couple hundred burs and stuff in a few shank sizes.

And then you say "Carbide" and eyes roll back in heads and strange "Ooh, ooh" noises emanate.

Hah. And here I am thinking that I have spent the last year working to zero in on only two steels to use (one stainless and one non stainless). A fools errand it would appear.

reminds me of snipe hunting.....

We are now officially out of MagnaCut for the initial heat of steel. More is on order and should be available from us or other authorized distributors in August. That probably won't last long but with 90,000 pounds on order, I expect we'll be able to keep up soon. We appreciate all of the support and patience from everyone while we get this loaded up.

SB still has a few hundred pounds left if you want to give them a call at 800-365-1168.

Thank you for your information. I can quit thinking about that last 1/4" bar now...

What is left is around .180 and .200 (after cleanup).

fitzo fitzo it’s just waiting for you..., .

The 1/4" caught my eye because I started thinking I could make a Gregory-style whacker and the rest would be good for deep hollow grinds for some daggers. The daggers would need the ability to get a nice mirror, so if it's tough to polish I'm going to wait until a couple smaller pieces are available to make a performance tester. It was mostly about being able to compare with Matt and his HT, anyway.

Aside from that, the few knives I have left in me are all going to stay home and be dedicated along the lines of making some stuff inspired by the makers who inspire me: Hill Pearce, a couple of daggers by Jim Hardenbrook from Points of Interest 1, Virgil, some of that inverted small-wheel grinding that Luckett does, several others. So, the stash of 440C and ATS34 will do for what I want. I even have a couple 6ft bars of ATS from the Sornberger Supply days of the 80s. And, I like to go through a mirror to get to the perfecto satin.

It was just GAS. And, this time, I managed to pass it.

Thanks for thinking of me, though!:) What did you end up getting, DanF DanF ?
