Don't buy gas today! Prices are hitting the roof. Pretty soon, we will have prices as high as in Europe. I just saw prices at 130 EURO per liter in the Netherlands. This is somewhere around $6/gallon.
Meanwhile, the government is not selling off the reserve, it is buying more to increase the reserve and boost prices.
Today is avoid the pumps day.....time to protest.

Arty?

Please do not forget that point - you just multiplied our quite high gas-price per liter by ten... (in Germany it is about 1.24 Euros per liter)...

How much is the gas per gallon in the US right now that the prices "are hitting the roof"?

Yes, it is very expensive here. Because of this cars with hybrid technology or cars that will run with very low fuel are some of the favourites among the buyers. (My Renault will drive 100 kilometers with 6-7 liters, my wive´s Volkswagen will need about 4.5 liters for the same distance) Maybe someday it will be easier for Europe to abandon the Arab oil than it will be for the US - but right now I could use some low gas-prices too...

1. Talk to OPEC

2. Talk to EPA about standards for building new refineries.

3. Talk to "Bush's PALS' who make money with or without shortages, but it seems MORE with shortages.

Also of note are other products related to refinement that rise in price- like propane and I believe heating oil.

This subject is very similar to why we are paying 15 bucks for a new music CD.
I suppose it's similar to why your finance's wedding ring cost 1200 bucks instead of 300- see South Africa.

I'm still perplexed why a box of breakfast cereal weighing some few ounces cost 5 dollars.

As for the Strategic Reserve- that's there in case there's another 9-11, or worse, like a nuke in Saudi.

It is worth noting too that the proposal by Kerry to divert the million barrels a day from the strategic reserve is exacty the amount of oil ANWAR would have in production today if Kerry and other's hadn't voted against it in 95.

Bush should jawbone his cabinet and himself. When he ran for office, he promised to press the oil companies to keep prices down if they soared.

I am feeding a fat van (wife's) and a smaller car with gas...I need to get to work, and it is a long commute. The current high prices are like a new tax, but with a different name. It wasn't very long ago that prices for gas in the U.S. ran about $1 per gallon.

Yes, I'm aware of what Bush thought he could do before he was elected. But today, arty, what pressure do you think the President can bring to bare against OPEC? He has attempted to get refineries going but can't because of unrealistic EPA standards.
That is actually your 'tax'- you pay for a 'no' vote on new industry with higher prices.

I don't want to get into personal political opinions here, but the President does seem to be acting in the best interests of the oil companies - as Uncle Bill put it - his friends. I am thinking of the VP, Rice, and all of the folks who own or contribute to running the oil companies. The Pres. didn't make his money in corn flakes.

I don't own oil companies, and I didn't impose any taxes on anyone. I just don't want to pay to enrich a few. I don't mind paying my fair share, but if I have to pay high prices for gas, I would like clean air too. I am not happy with dirty air and high gas prices.

I find that when I drive through the corn fields, I get dusted by the farmers. When I drive through the cities, I get polluted by the big cars and trucks. I don't mind getting my car inspected, but it doesn't happen here in the part of Illinois where I live.

All I want to do is breathe and drive to work - that is not too much to ask of our gov't. I don't seem to get much success with breathing, but I do have to drive a great deal.

I am not pointing fingers, but I don't care for the high gas prices. I would like to see our gov't - at least try to do something.

The only person who seems happy with the current state of affairs is Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia....and the folks at Exxon.

Arty, when Democrats in the Senate refuse drilling in Anwar, when Bush can't get new refineries built because of democrats refusing to allow his energy policy, then you do pay for it.

Now, wait and see- if BLM raises grazing fees because of pressure from environmental groups see how much your next burger costs you.

If you don't want to buy from OPEC- you have to do something about it.
Ca refused offshore drilling.

Consider high prices your tax for these things. Products move by gas- and high gas prices mean you pay for higher food costs and everything else.
Don't blame Exon or Bush- start drilling, relax standards on new refineries, and fund alternative energy sources.

I'd like to see gas prices go higher. :D

I think that cheap gas has ruined this country.

Remember when most towns had a bakery? Now they ship it in from one central place, and all the people that had the higher paying jobs are working at Wal Mart, where they sell stuff that is shipped in from China.

What if fuel prices went so high that (gasp  ) they had to build manufacturing facilities here in the US.

I can remember during the early 80's when oil and gas boomed here, and in Louisana, Texas etc. Then Opec started pumping again. All the US wells were capped off and all those people lost their jobs. The oil is still there, it just cost more to get it than Mid east oil. I heard an economist on the radio this morning that said it would have to go to $60 a barrel to make most domestic production economical again. I have heard $2.50 is the magic number per gallon at which biodeisel would be competitive.

I disagree with the Democrats wanting to tap into the strategic reserve. Look at the cars people are driving. Most have double the cylinders they did 20 years ago. I was stuck in traffic this morning listening to a discussion on oil prices. Around me? Hummers. Suburbans, King Cab 10 cylinder Dodge Rams, and an endless number of Semis hauling stuff in that used to be made locally.

I disagree with the Republicans wanting to drill in Anwar. Why tap into a reserve when we are probably wasting more than that area would produce?

Now if gas prices stay high it will cost us more. But if I had to pay a little more for stuff, but that meant that my neighbor could have a good paying manufacturing job I'd be willing to sacrifice. If it meant that more farmers made money selling corn for ethanol and soy for biodeisel then I'd be happy to pay more. If it meant some 21 year old kid with his whole life ahead of him would get to live his whole life instead of going to war I'd pay double for fuel.

I really do feel that we have to be the most selfish self centered place on the planet. :(

Some interesting thoughts, Hollow.

Anwar certainly had enough oil to make it worth while- it might even have more, as many oil plots do. I thought we could get the oil and leave the environment alone. I think the extreme left has hijacked the environmental movement, as does the founder of Green Peace. There really wasn't any good reason not to drill- other than doomsday tales of environmental whackos and the carribou herd.

I just don't know if it would work the way you hope- if fuel prices rose. I suspect many of us would not buy American union steel products if they cost too much, fuel would have to skyrocket, and even then, how many of us could afford a closed market domestic industry? Not many.

Certainly, if higher gas prices would improve the quality of life here in the US it would be worth it. Chances are though, that it would not. European gas prices are taxed heavier than ours. I don't think a good argument can be made that our Goverment spends its money wisely.

oh- I don't understand SUVS and heavy trucks in the cities, but here in the Mountainess West and even when I lved in the Mojave four wheel drive is a must. AS for self centered-that's what people are everywhere. It's not just here- we just have the means is all.

I'm reading a book now that explains why,the prices will continues to climb... mostly due to the undeveloped countries becoming developed. In ten years it is predicted that china will have more cars than the US and will be willing to pay for the gas. Car ownership there is expanding at exponetial rate. Supply and demand will make you pay much more very soon..... My advise it to dump the cars that are not fuel effecient......Culture change is on the way.

Hollow- it is a fact that the FOUNDER of Greenpeace believes as do many of us that the environmental movement has been hijacked by the extreme left wing.

Most of us are completely willing to accept responsibilities and limits on our lives for the environment- but not for silly, expensive, ridiculous measures- like saving a snail in Montana.

If you wish to be honest about the environment you should look at species loss projections under numerous plans- the most strident plans still call for an enormous loss of wildlife, and there is nothing we can do about it.

Brantoken- that is fascinating. I was thinking of getting a gas saving SUV instead of a tradtional truck.

130 Euro per liter is about $520.00 U.S. per gallon. 1 Euro = $1.15
Here in Italy the price per gallon is about $4.70 U.S. You probably meant 1.30 Euro...! You guys have it cheap in the U.S., even if it's historically high.

Time for protests!!! Time for alternative energy, and heavy government funding to get off of oil dependency. This is fantasy, albeit the real solution... It would be wonderful for the farmers, our economy and well being to produce bio fuels that put big business oil as "an alternative".

Let it get to about the same price as it is here in Italy, and I'm sure the consumers will let the car manufacturers know that they want energy efficient and more practical cars made.

The amount of oil in the world is going to remain the same. Think if every household in India had 2 cars and an air conditioner. How long will it last?

Then someone better come up with battery technology and this 'fusion' we keep hearing about. If we think Global Warming is bad now, wait until all of China and South America are industrialized.

Sounds on point to me. I also think that the Enron and Arthur Anderson and other corp scandals were exposed to make way for the corps that Bush had deals with, which were doing the same shady book-keeping but were not slammed fer it.

THe US uses 45% of the world's petroleum. Without a culture change there will be no change, I agree.

Also, I dunno if we'll ever get away from petroleum, since it is a major ingredient in plastic production (most plastics, not all), and it's that or kill a tree for paper/wood products (which are also used on plastics manufacture).

Also, I have reached the Point where i too would rather pay more for an American product if it kept a worker on the line employed. We've outsourced so much production and industry, and now we're outsourcing tech jobs to India because it is cheaper to have India doing programming, tech support (like Microsoft does), and tech writing. This is killing our tech sector. Engineering is next.

All that'll be left in this country will be Sales and marketing, middle men, and once those positions are offshored, welcome to the Third World in the US. We'll have nothing that the rest of the world wants.

Keith
