Khukri, kukri, khukhri, however it's supposed to be spelled,I've recently renewed my interest in khukris.I've obtained a Cold Steel LTC in a trade and like it much but want a traditional styled khukri.I once owned one that was touted as being military issue, etc. and couldn't get it sharp at all.Are the Atlanta Cutlery "military issue" w/wood scales and officers models w/horn handles worth $29.00 plus shipping or should I skip that level and go for a real one from HI ?Also of the two Atlanta offerings is the wood or horn better for hard use?My guess is the wood scaled version is full tang construction while the horn handle looks like a stud/thru bolt deal.tom.

Tom, welcome to the Cantina.

Without a doubt H.I. are the best. Ask anyone, in any forum and they will agree.
Go to the H.I. web site and check out the different variations and the method of manufacture.
Ask lots of questions here and you'll get an overwhelming response to each one.

Nice to see you here, Tom. I frequent this place quite a bit. While many may argue, Himalayan Imports products cannot be beat for quality, selection, and price for a handmade knife. However, be warned that the company and conversation can be addicting, and HIKV is always a possibility. :D

In any case, welcome to Uncle Bill's Cantina.

Hey, Tom.

Definately the HI. I own an 18-inch WWII model (based on a military model) and it is superb. It's attractive, sturdier than virtually anything I own (including cars), sharp, and aggressive. It's a real user. And it's not too big and heavy to use. Or, if you prefer, there's the 16.5" WWII, and the British Air Service model, all bearing military names. There are also models that don't chop as well, but are longer and quicker if you want more of a weapon or brush whacker, such as the Gelbu Special, the Sirupati, Chainpuri, Kobra, Chitlangi, etc....

Ya know, that's another great thing about HI: the selection. There's a Khukuri for every need! And if you wondering about the extra money, here's my opinion: it's worth every penny. All the guys here will agree. When you buy an HI, you buy it for life. It's one that you can abuse forever and still give to your kids or grandkids.

Go HI, man. You won't regret it.

Thanks,

Nam

There are a lot of khuks out there that are slapped together tourist trade stuff. You could probably try the Atlanta Cutlery khuks; if you aren't satisfied you can always get a HI model. My first khuk was the HI AK and its built like a tank. I beat the crap out of it and its a little blemished but still perfect. All of my other big blades came from HI also.

Welcome Deputy!

Well, as you can see, and will probably see some more, everyone in here will recommend HI until their computers shut down on them.

Then if they have your address they'll come over to your house, peek over your shoulder to see if there's any coffee brewing, and invite themselves in. After you return with a couple of coffees, they'll unexpectedly pull out of their backpack one of the biggest knives that you have ever seen in your life, not to intimidate of course, merely to educate...

"Now this model here, this model's the 'regular' WWII. They come much bigger actually. All depends on what your going to do with them."

"Now this one, this one's a beauty. It's called a Pen Knife, and you see here, here is where it is different from the WWII ..."

Seven cups of coffee later, and the two of you are hunched over your computer, looking for a Deal of the Day.

Seven weeks later you find yourself wondering what cacti are??

Seven months later you are spreading out your collection on your bed, taking pictures of them, and posting them on the forum.

And seven years later ..... :D :D :D

Welcome again Tom. I'd recommend HI too.

Welcome Tom! :D
I will also chime in for the HI khuks!! They are the very best in Khuks that I have found. And I have found between 25 and 30 of them since the year 2000 or so. The khukuri seems to be my favorite fixed blade design to date. I love the HI ones the most and there are such varations to choose from that you can end up with lots of them and not have two that are alike. Look carefully at all of the HI selections and see which most fits what you would want to use one for.
The M-43 is one of the standards that I would suggest for a newcomer here.
Full tang, wood handles, a nice gentle forward curving design with a comfortable handle. It is a wonderful chopper also, while being fast enough to be considered a weapons grade khuk also.
Good luck choosing! ;)

You can put off an HI for a while. But it'll linger at the back of your mind til you buy one. You'll ask yourself, "Are they really better?".

And don't listen to them about HIKV.

I haven't bought an HI in a year and a half. Of course, I haven't bought a khuk in a year and a half, either.

Tom - think Pringles. Once you pop, you can't stop. (This must be the most abused marketing slogan in recent history.) Very few HI owners only own one.

Not that it's a bad thing, but something to keep in mind.

Thank you for the warm welcome.Good to see familiar faces.(Rene your package goes out in twelve hrs, twenty min.).It seems unanamous that I should save my pennies for a HI, and I still might try another cheap one for something to fill the void (beside the LTC) until I get an HI.I'll probably stick with a WWII size one.Next I need to find the answer to what is a "smoke " request.I'm reading into it a religious thing?tom.

Hiya Tom,
The UBBB's and DOTD have slowed down a lot lately due to Uncle Bill's sickness and recent passing, but I'm sure they'll be back. In the meantime, save your pennies, and check out the Production Knives for Sale forum here on BFC (shameless plug) . I've bought and sold the smaller HI khuks (12" AK's, 15" Sirupatis) for as little as $30.00 here, and seen other users go for similar prices. Every so often a shark will liquidate a tiny fraction of his collection, usually for $20-30 less than HI price if the khuk is new, and significantly less if it's been used or was purchased as a blem.

Best,
Jeremy

Just buy one. Try a "little" 12" sirupati or an AK. Even a Bilton. You can quit anytime you want. Honest, pal, you can. I've quit several times myself. A lot of guys around here have quit many times. No problem. JUST ASK 'EM :D
