Just got a new one and it did not come with a sheath like other inlay models. Is that because it is Micarta and a sheath is not recommended?

Right, and I wonder why not? Specifically - will a sheath harm the Micarta?

I don't think it will harm the micarta. I just think CRK view the micarta models as work knives that don't need the "protection" of a leather slip case

Gotcha, that makes sense. I have and extra sheath and did not want to put the knife in it if there was an issue.

edit - not that I would, but more if I should.

IMO, leather wouldn't be anymore abrasive than human skin, especially dirty human skin, it could be coated with oil dirt grime debris etc.
I think micarta is tough.

I think micarta is tough.

And 'cleanable' if I read correctly. I thought I'd seen where people wash it if it gets too dirty from use.

Well I've heard it gets darker from use, I'm guessing hand oils and dirt.

Why I haven't gotten one yet... I think too much. I'd hate for the micarta to smell funky from sweat..

The micarta will darken with use from the oils in your skin. All it takes is some warm water, soap and an old toothbrush to clean it. You can also put some mineral oil on it to darken it up.
Not all inlays come with a pocket sheath. The Unique's and some of the CCG's come with the sheath's.

Yup, a bit of dish soap and water will bring that micarta back to the original (lighter color) finish, and oils over time from your hands or mineral oil if you want to speed the process, will bring it back nice and dark. Some people prefer one or the other. I like the way it changes darker over time personally.

Rubbing alcohol works well too. If I can find it, I get the alcohol wipes but a dipped Qtip works just fine. This keeps soap and water from sticking around in the pivot, screw's, etc... My large 21 Micarta and my small 21 Micarta both did not come with a sheath.

Micarta is incredibly easy to take care of. It doesn't stink from oils absorbed, the micarta only absorbs oil into the exposed fibers on the outermost layer, the rest is soaked in hardened epoxy and cannot absorb anything. You don't even need soap and a toothbrush, just rubbing it clean with my thumb under running water returns mine to the original dull grey.

Funny though, the Damascus micarta knives come with the leather sheath. Just an FYI.

Bought my small Insingo from a northern vendor in April and carry it daily. No sheath came with mine. That said, I have no issue as I prefer it pocket clipped. The micarta has darkened but contrasts nicely against the titanium. I really like it as is.

I carry most of mine in leather CRK slip pouches, Micarta 21 and Micarta 25s. Been doing it for a couple of years and it has never harmed them.

It is my understanding, that the micarta with the stonewashed blades are "workhorses" - therefore don't need a leather slip sheath.
If it has a damascus blade the upgrade calls for a sheath.
Furthermore it is possible, that a dealer adds a sheath as a bonus.
hope this helps.
