No model number

I believe that he anvil is used both to indicate a 2002 production year and to designate that the knife is a custom. I'm pretty sure I've read that knives bearing the anvil (for either reason) don't include the model number.

not on this knife----the anvil indicates the year on this one--that is all---it is not a custom----that is cool farm probably just a blade that made it through production without getting the model stamped...I have several like that--not stamped at all...
but went all the way through production and even into a box and bought at the store...

Again, with the 2002 knives, there is no model number stamped. That's known, and referenced on Buck's website.
(I still think that's the case with customs, as well)

I think we are getting confused with wording.
The knife shown is a 2002 model year as hhmoore stated.
For 2002 (the 100th anniversary) the anvil REPLACED the model number on most all knives. So the anvil when used alone without a model number is specific to 2002. The anvil is considered to be the date code in this instance
When used on Custom knives, the anvil symbol is always followed by the word "CUSTOM".(4 lines.. BUCK/Anvil/CUSTOM/USA) That usage started in 2002 and continues to the present. This usage is not year specific as date codes are not used on customs marked in this way.
Clear as mud? /Roger

Yes.

It's a 2002 that lacks a model number.

With a flaw like that it's a horrible mistake and most people would be ashamed and embarrassed to own it.

He should send it to me......I'm old enough not to care and I like to give a home to hopelessly messed up knives.

yeah it is--just read that......don't make sense they would take model number off???? oh well....

I heard the below

Buck's website explains the one year production of this model. This knife was made and sent to distributors as a trial to see if the market would support follow-on upgrade models. “

This part seems to be as muddy as mud. I purchased these four 110s in the last month from Buck. All have the anvil. None have the word custom, or a model number. Only the autographed one has any form of date.

Well, To muddy it the water more, there are Buck knives produces that do not have an anvil, custom or model number, from time to time. Most notably the 475. Look at my pic in the SPS. The last two have no model number.

Nice..I'm bad. Forgot about those newer marks.
As with all things Buck, seems there are always exceptions to be found.

Just bought this one and was wondering,Why no model number BUCK Alpha Hunter 2002- Anvil USA-420HC--Rosewood ScalesView attachment 1212800 View attachment 1212801 View attachment 1212802

Farm,

I purchased this exact same knife off ebay...probably from the same seller you got yours from. (I recognize the photos) He had three of them, I got one, my brother got one, and he was trying to sell the last one. It appears you got the last one.

With that said, when I got mine, I did a bit more research and came up with a conclusion that this specific Alpha Hunter was a "run up" or "pre-production" to the Model 277T in late 2002 / early 2003. The ones we have are 420HC steel, the 277T is ATS-34 steel and originally listed at retail $94.00. In my personal opinion, we have a rare knife that is hard to come by. I'm glad I jumped on mine when I did.
