I recently emailed BodyCote asking for a price quote on their coatings, here's the reply email I got from Olga Smith:

"At this time, due to the recent move to our new facility, we offer our coatings for the blades only to knife manufacturers and custom knife makers."

:(

I hope they eventually resume their coating services for individuals.

I am sure that doing blades for individuals is a logistical nightmare. However, I hope that they consider doing individual orders again in the near future. I have about a dozen or so knives I was wanting to get done.

Yup, tis true. I talked with Olga this afternoon. I hope that later on down the road after the Greensboro, NC facility is fully operational, maybe they will reconsider honoring orders from us regular folk.

That's really bad news. I had a few done by them and I was really happy with their work. I also have a few more taken apart and ready to go. I just hadn't gotten around to calling them. I hope they go back to doing knives for us common folk.:(

I wonder if there may be a solution. I do see that doing small individual orders may not be feasable for them. What if we got together one order of about 20 or so knives and sent them from the same place? For example, a group of us wanting to get this done could send the knives to a central person. This person could send them to bodycote as one order, bodycote sends them back to the central person, who in turn sends the knives back to the owners. I just arbitrarily threw the number 20 out there. I am not sure how many they may want, it may be less or more. Just an idea for those of us wanting to get this done.

Myabe we could have Dex help us on that, he lives so close anyway. And we just chip in a bit for the trouble.

Yes, if the demand is high enough, we could have a sort of BladeForums bi-monthly coating, where you can send in knives to one individual who then brings the batch of knives down to the factory every two months.

Or maybe we could determine when to deliver the knives to Bodycote by having a minimum number of knives. No coating before that amount is collected.

If we can handle it properly, the amount of extra work that Bodycote has to do should be minimized. Also, like in the case of custom knifemaker customers, their good performance would likely result in repeat business.

I'd like to get in on this deal too. I've got at least two knives I have been hoping to get coated.

Do we have any volunteers to contact BodyCote about the possibility? It might be best if someone who has already done business with them were willing to take this on.

I drove past the Greensboro plant yesterday, but will not be going that way again for a while. I contacted them a few weeks ago and got the same, no individual orders reply, but they said that they were going to post here on the forum when they can, so I assumed that they will do individual orders again. Hope this helps, Reagan
