No more Harsey for me :( lol

So for a couple of years now, I have found myself pining over pictures and reviews of the Gerber LHR, hoping to own one someday. As I'm sure the well educated folks around these parts know, the LHR has been discontinued :( . I am a double majoring full time student, father and husband and only work between 20 and 30 hours per week and thus, have limited income for spending on toys. The LHR represented the only Harsey collaboration that I could hope to own in the near future due to its cheap price compared to the Green Beret and Spartan blades. There is also the Gerber Big Rock, and while I love the design and don't mind the 440a steel, I would rather own a blade produced in the USA or Japan. So here is my question: Can anyone recommend any knives with similar design to the LHR, Big Rock, or Harsey Hunter that won't cost me more than 200$? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

PS forgot to mention that the blade will primarily be used as an all around camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, utility, last ditch self defense blade.

Sorry retzius, I forgot to mention it'll probably take me another 8 months or so to save up the money. Tuition and books! Bleh!

I have never read that the 170 is a Harsey design... Can you give me a link or some info on that?

lol Thanks Omar, I need it. Getting two four year undergrad programs done in five years is rough sometimes! retzius and weech3, I'm diggin those folders but I'm looking more for a fixed blade at the moment. Keep the suggestions coming though!

The blade I want doesn't necessarily HAVE to be a Harsey design, just something similar. I handled an LHR in person and LOVE the blade shape and ergos. The ZT looks like it falls in the realm of what i'd consider. Thanks 9blades! Anyone else?

I did not mean to come across condescending, I was just questioning the reality based on your situation. I can totally understand the need for a distraction with your work load, and really hope you can pull it off. The fact that you stated it would take you 8 months or so to afford it tells me you have your priorities laid out, and for that I take my hat off to you. That education and your family is priceless and permanent. Our hobbies are necessary to maintain some sanity in the daily grind of life, but in the end, they can not replace our family or our ability to provide for them. Bless you and yours.

Blessings,

Omar

Omar, you didn't come off as condescending at all so no worries :) I'm fine with saving little by little as I can (took me years to save up for my first 1911 lol) to purchase something that will be of use to me for my lifetime, and maybe be passed on. I'm currently in the last year of my undergrad work and will be heading to grad school to become a Doctor of Pharmacy so that I can ensure my family won't have to worry about whether or not we'll have a home from month to month or food from day to day like I did growing up, so your words are not lost on me in the slightest, so thank you :)

That said, maybe I'll just get the Big Rock until I'm finished with school and and can afford to spend gun money on a knife :D

mctrinket, I know Beckers get high praise and are no doubt top quality, but I just don't find them as aesthetically pleasing

It might be more expensive than what you're looking for but maybe the Benchmade Marc Lee Glory knife?

What about a ritter rsk mk2, or called a bk 12? It holds some similarities with the lhr if I remember correctly. I really wanted a lhr until I decided on a 12 and really love it.

I had the Marc Lee Glory knife and sold it. That is one knife that I will buy again.

I like the look of the bk12 but I think it might be more hefty than what I want as I don't really need much chopping ability. The Benchmade Glory is SICK and another design I like, but probably out of my price range for the next few years lol. I've actually been contemplating just purchasing a chinese (gasp!) knockoff like one of these:

or, the Gerber Big Rock (still made in china:(), which usually gets great reviews about its value for the money. I think one of these would function well for basic utility and satisfy my want for a knife of this design until I finish school and can afford an LHR if I can find it and/or a Spartan Model II or Harsey Hunter. If I need to skin a deer during that time, I can always borrow my father-in-law's Buck lol :D Anyone out there with experience with the blades I listed?

The LHR can still be found for >$150...you just have to know where to find one. PM/Email me and I'll get you a link. As a side note...I purchased my Green Beret 7" from a returning Soldier for $225. Deals can be had/found if you're patient enough to wait.
