No more laws

Just a talk I had with some friends. Suppose there are no laws about knives. Carry whatever you want, open or concealed. Would you pay high price for a nice custom carry? Would you carry double edged knives? What would you carry based on what you have, and how would your collection change?

Me?

I'd carry my becker 10 and neck knife.

id carry an axe for a while for novelty value :D

once the novelty had worn off i would pack a sweet ,convenient fixed blade like tops nite chaser or a sweet folder like my microtech LCC carbon fiber

I would rotate a few autos into my EDC collection, and carry a short fixed blade more frequently.

I have never paid too much attention to knife laws. My EDC would probably remain the same and my show off knives would still be my Case slipjoints. True classics don't go out of style.I probably would buy several more autos to join the current ones. But that is just a minor change since I have OTFs and some nice german stag autos already in the collection and I have carried them when ever I felt like carrying them.If you use plain old common sense nobody is going to cause a ruckus. One example being not playing with your butterfly knife around sheeple. If your around fellow knifaholics play all you want to. My Kershaws with speed safe open fast enough for my needs so all in all not too many changes from the current line up.

Yes.
I would probably carry an auto now and then,
and I would definately carry a fixed blade with me.

I'd carry mostly what I already have... Although I would probably have an auto with me more often. Right now it's rather annoying to have to stop at home and drop of the Benchmade whenever I want to cross the river from Portland into Vancouver, WA. Ah well. They can't have silencers or full auto either, poor bastards. And a sales tax to boot!

I'd second this. For swords, I'll limit it to a rapier (did Epee) or a Katana (did kendo).

Once the knife laws were all repealed, I'd continue to carry what I do now (Gunting most days, Dodo for light days, plus a small utility folder, and the occasional small fixed blade). The only difference would be that I would no longer have to carry the fixed blade "unconcealed" so it might move from the front of my belt to behind my hip, or I might have some shoulder harnesses made. Knife size probably wouldn't increase (blade lengths are largely un-restricted in CA). Double edges are legal in CA, so I probably wouldn't get any more daggers - it's not my favorite blade shape although it looks nice. I've avoided balisongs because they're illegal in public in CA, so I might get a BM and try some flipping. I've avoided autos mostly because their mechanical complexity seems unjustified on something that should be extremely simple, but I might get a nice OTF to play with.

All in all, not a lot of changes. Knowledgeable knife users would probably carry pretty much what they already do, but sales of autos and balisongs would probably skyrocket as Joe Everybody stocked up.

My EDC folder wouldn't change but I'd definitely start carrying a fixed blade. Depending on where I was going, maybe a Howling Rat, Busse NO, Al Mar Operator, or the brand new Ontario Rat 7

Autos and fixed blades all the way baby. And probably a sword or khukuri if I were going into a bad part of town. :D

Would 'Public Perception' change as well, or just the laws?

I don't carry my Victorinox Tinker because it's the only thing that's legal, I carry it because whipping out my AFCK scares the crap out of sheeple!!! I still carry the AFCK, I just don't let the sheeple see it.

But, if there were no knife restrictions, I suppose I would consider Autos.

If there were no knife restrictions AND no general public fear of knives, I would probably carry (and more companies would make) a well designed 'tactical' folder with a blade of around 5", Probably still carry my SwissTool, Probably carry a fixed blade a lot more often (there are no specific laws against it in PA to my knowledge, but if it didn't scare folks, I'd worry less about hiding it).

Nothing would change. I carry (legally) a three inch S30V fixed blade knife in a sheath with a boot clip that I keep in my back pocket. It is plenty big enough for an EDC and will work to field dress a deer and skin it- no problem. I wouldn't worry about using it on an elk either, although I usually carry a little bigger knife for that. Anything larger that about a five inch blade to me is a poor substitute for an axe or machete and is clumsy to use for fine work.

Abso-phucking-loutly!

Right now I carry an auto on occasion even though I'm not supposed to, or a larger folder than I'm supposed to on occasion.

BUT...
If there were no knife/carry laws???

Let's put it THIS way....
Right now my collection is about 70 folders and about 5 fixed-blades.

If the laws were gone and I could carry what ever I wanted my collection would be more like:
50 fixed-blades and 25 folders!

I would definately carry a fixed all the time and I would definately spend more money on really nice fixed blades like Chris Reeve, Busse or customs as well as have a bigger collection of autos.

Ahhhhh. What a nice day-dream you made for us!:D
Good post, Angelus1781.

I'd carry autos and balis more often. Maybe throw a large fixed blade or a sword on now and then for the hell of it. (don't carry fixed blades much expect when it the woods, camping etc., I can carry a sword If I wanted to legally, but I can do with out getting into an arugement that it's a "tool")

Well...
The first two things I'd get would be the full sized dagger, and a bali-song (as a sheeple-friendly utility blade). Or a bowie. or a KA-BAR. Anything that was illegal for mee all these years....

Oooh...let's see...

I would dish out the cash for a Cold Steel Black Bear Classic, and a Dalton auto of some sort.

Oh well. Back to reality....:(

I guess I would carry my Fred Perrin lightweight bowie as EDC, an Emerson La Griffe (I'm fond of Fred's work :D ) as a necker for backup in places where weird situations could occur, and a franciskaner axe/scramasax combo for any excursions (good range of combat tactics, can handle any job for long lasting outdoor raid).
