Greetings: I just got back from my local brick and mortar knife shop. I was looking for a plain edge Endura or Stretch in zdp189. Unfortunately they only had the combo edge in stock. The counter person then mentioned that Spyderco was discontinuing producing all folders in ZDP189 because the difficulty in machining this steel made them cost prohibitive at the current price point. Has anyone heard this or is it BS ? OldDude1

BS -- It's still being used for knives in their 2010 catalog.

Caly 3
Delica 4
Endura 4
Stretch

I just bought a Kershaw Blur with ZDP189 off of Ebay. I am impatiently waiting for it. They seem to be few and far between on the various online knife sites.

hello dapper dan welcome & i think you will enjoy zdp189.

Thanks. I've been a member a few less months than you but I just have 1 post against your 1400+. I know so little about knives compared to a lot of people here. I felt it prudent to read as much as possible and avoid asking stupid questions. Although this will be my first Kershaw Blur I intend to get one in the various metals, just because.

We had a guy working at the shop (that I work at in the summers) once who had a real talent for BS...suffice to say he didn't last long. We were still dealing with the aftereffects of his imaginative mouth a year later when a customer came back with a Benchmade 940 that was scratched to crap and had the tip snapped off it. The a-hole had told this poor guy that the anodized aluminum would never scratch and that Benchmade's S30V wouldn't break even if you pried with it. :(

I taught my manager and the other guys behind the knife counter here everything they know about sharp stuff. They still get it wrong sometimes--and I correct them whenever I notice it--but they try real hard to give the straight facts to the best of their ability and will admit when they don't know something. It's sad to hear how much BS a lot of folks who come through our doors have been fed. There's a lot of bad cookies out there. :(

But yeah. ZDP-189 is around to stay. Spyderco just started switching the ZDP-189 Delicas and Enduras over to full flat grind, so if you prefer saber grind (which I don't) then snap up one while you can. :)

My son wants a Delica in that steel for Xmas, that's a while off but I gotta pick him up one.
