I gave $3.00 for a double bit axe at a yard sale. It came with a new Warrior handle taped to it. I can not find a name on it. It has been used, but there is red paint still visible on it. There is a number stamped into one side of it. "D25" is the number. A file will remove a little metal, but I can tell by the sound that it is hard. The edge has one tiny chip on it. I think it has had a handle replaced in the past.

What can anyone tell me about the meaning of this number?

Thanks for any help.

I can't say for sure what the numbers mean. I am surprised you don't have an answer by now.

Does the axe also have ribs in the eye? It sounds like you may be describing a later unbranded True Temper. Pictures would help.

garry3, I took pictures, but do not understand how to add them. I'd sure like to add them.

It does have ribs in the eye.

The handle that came with it had a, partially gone, paper sticker/label on it. If I am not mistaken it said "Warrior". I can't relook at it cause it is gone now. The name tag/sticker was familiar from the years ago, before I cared about the "good o;d" stuff. Course back then it was not old.:)

If you're using a site to upload the photos (like photobucket) there should be a link to copy that will display only that photo. It will have something like

Reasonably sure that is a True Temper. It should serve you well. Wish some one would chime in on what the numbers mean, I am not sure enough to say.

I just going from memory, but it seems I have one or more numbered heads like that and holding them side by side with true temper all the details match up. Also seems I have seen the number on the other side of an axe with the TT branding on the other side. Different numbers though, perhaps to represent a contract batch or something.

I would soak it in something to get rid of that ugly red paint.

Someone told me, or I read somewhere, that the number indicated the hardness of the metal. ??

The paint. It is original factory paint. I sorta like old stuff with some of the original finish to go with the rust. If I take the red finish off it will only be rusty, eventually.

Probably a heat treat number. Much like the heat treat number that would come with a production run of rebar for those that are familiar with it.
Has nothing to do with a rockwell hardnes number. Just a production run.
