So I called the shop today to ask about putting a satin finish on my BA3, and I was told that Jerry won't put a satin finish on ANY BA3!??
What's up with that? Is he trying to protect the market on the new satin finished BA coming out soon? I asked and was told that I could get a satin finish on any other blade besides the BA3. I understand that they are busy now with all of the military orders, but as far as I understood that was not the issue.:( So what's the deal??

My understanding was that any blade could be refurbished with any finish for $65. It's not like I want it done by next week, I can wait. But to not even have the option seems a bit odd. Maybe I misundertood. Jerry, can you elaborate?

Matt,
Actually the BA3 is not the only blade that we do not offer a satin finish on. For example: The Groove Master and the Public Defender. There are specific reasons why we do not offer the satin finish on these blades. Of course Jerry will have to chime in to give you the reasons because I can't remember right now!! LOL!(I should be in bed!)

Also, the $65.00 for Satin finish is only for the smaller blades. The price goes up on the bigger the knives!

Hope I've helped!!!

Night all!!

It's all about the flats my friends. . . .it's all about the flats!

Our combat grade blades are not surface ground. Surface grinding of the blank cleans up the "flats" or flat surfaces of the steel. It also greatly reduces the thickness of the blade in the process. This is done PRIOR to any bevel grinding. Thus the reason that the Active Duty is only .150" thick and the new Satin finished version of the BA3 will also be .150" thick. We have to remove approx. .030" -.050" in order to make the flats "pretty". This procedure does NOTHING to increase the performance of a blade and is a cosmetic procedure ONLY.

The BA3 is only ground part way to the spine. This means that the "flats" are exposed or visible above the grind. Therefore, in order to satin finish a BA3 or any other blade that is only ground part way up and that has "exposed flats" above the grind, the surface grinding would have to be done before the blade is beveled.

Blades that are ground full to the spine and only have an exposed ricasso can be satin finished on a belt grinder after the bevels are ground in the blade.

Hope that helps,

Jerry

I'm getting the hang of this. I thought it had something to do with the thickness and grind. I just didn't want to open my mouth and come off like an idiot if I was way off base.

O.K., that makes sense. So if I understand, it is possible to order a BA3, Groovemaster, or Public Defender with a satin finish, but not possible to put a satin finish on a blade that is already completed with the coating?

Correct on the existing model info and "sort of" on the rest. We don't do individual blades in a satin finish, ie, BA3, Satin Jack, Groovemaster. We do special runs like the BA3 that is coming up but our tooling change over is far too costly for a single blade. So, you can get these models in a satin finish IF you order one when we do a special run.

Nuke on!
