Read some comments from people here who won't take their assisted opening knives like the Kershaw Leek out of their house , or off their property for fear of getting in trouble/offending sheeple.

Nice of ya'll to be so thoughtfull, but an easy way to carry your favorite blade with no problems is to simply open it with 2 hands. They'll never know it's anything but a lock back. Luv my Leek, it goes everywhere. P.S. The Avalanche is great for harder duty & is a bargain.
Cheers

So are these knives legal to carry or not? :) There technically isn't a switch, or button to deploy them, unless you consider pushing on the blade a switch? Anyway, I got an Avalanche awhile back with 440V (Is that what they are still using?) and it has some blade play as the liner doesn't lock as well as it could. Is this common or did I get a lemon? :)

They're legal, according to the letter of the law at least. However, some DA's are getting creative with their interpretation of the law and prosecuting them. Living in GA right now I don't worry about it too much, and at home in PA it's pretty safe as well. If I lived in LA or somewhere similar I doubt I would carry one though.

Good Evening All-

Slices, that is a good point. Sheeple run on emotion rather than logic, so it is easy to put their feebled minds at rest.

I work in an office environment and will deftly "feign" the need for two hands to open a BM Mini-AFCK or BM 705 or even substantial automatics like a Microtech SOCOM or BM AFO. People would freak out with the small knives being opened with one hand...I can use the large blades and not even raise an eyebrow using the aforementioned technique.

here in San Diego, i make no bones about carrying my Leek with me EVERYWHERE. at home, or at work, or for the most part, in public, i don't hide it. i use it whenever i need it, and in general, i open it one-handed. every once in a while, when i am in the company of overly-nervous "sheeple", i will use my SAK instead.

my Blink, on the other hand, gets used even in front of the faint-of-heart. anyone who thinks that's a weapon is a complete and utter assclown.

I take my Rainbow Leek everywhere with me...it is the most sheeple friendly knife I own!

To the best of my knowledge, they ARE legal, even here in Colorado. We can buy 'em at Sportsman's Warehouse. But by 2 handed opening, it becomes a non-issue. WadeF, your Avalanche sounds like it needs to have the pivot pin tightened just a little. Mine locks up tight with no play. I'm pretty sure you can adjust the play out. The steel used is the same as yours, it's just that Crucible now calls it CPMS60V. You may be able to adjust your liner lock with a small screwdriver to get it to engage further. Mine comes into contact with nearly half the width of the blade. I really prefer to buy knives from local dealers so I can pick a good one.

I carry my rainbow leek everywhere. It is a great conversation starter. Most sheeple are so enamored by its classy looks and neat operation that they forget for a second that they are supposed to be terrified.

You need to be careful about determining legality. Knife laws, for the most part, are state and local laws so they vary quite widely all over the country. Federal knife laws relate to importation and interstate commerce, not to what is legal or not to carry.

Michigan, our next door neighbor has had a court case in which a Kershaw Speed Safe was considered to be an automatic. There aren't any statutes relating to it there but there is a legal precedent. There could be other cases but the point is that saying something is legal or not to carry relates to local and state law. There aren't any generalities. As an example, Californians can carry automatics (at least autos with short blades) but can't carry butterflies. In my state of Indiana autos are forbidden but butterflies are fine (and popular.) So what is good for Californians is bad for Hoosiers and vice versa at least in the view of state government. There are simply no real generalities.

I see a lot of people with Leeks around here. I had my eye on the rainbow leek, but isn't it 440A? Bestknives lists it as 440A and Knifecenter lists it as 420. I was hoping it would be something like 420V. So what is it!? Hehe. If it is 440A, how does the edge hold up? Also does the rainbow have a weird texture with that coating? I have a benchmade bali-song with that type of coating. Got it years ago and it's numbered 015/200. I think they advertised it as having some crazy high RC hardness.

**** the sheeple.

My SOG Flash II (thats the big one) is my off-hand EDC and food prep blade. On several occasions, I've taken it out, popped it open, and used it to halve a sub that the goons at
Subway were to inept to cut in half for me.

My CRKT Bearclaw sees daily use at work opening boxes and bags. When I have to refill one of the machines in view of a customer waiting for thier 'instant' passport photos or 'instant' digital prints to come out, time = repeat buisness. The Bearclaw appears in my hand from under my shirt, opens the bag in one swipe, and dissapears all in one motion. If the sheeple are so bothered by my use of my TOOLS to get thier goods to them as fast as possible then they can ****ing wait 10 minutes while I hunt around for one of the saftey razors.

With my friends (whom are all knife-tolerant, if not knife friendly), I hear "Jon, can I borrow a knife real quick?" all the time. Thier friends always get edgy when they hear that. Evidently its a sin to want to have a nice knife and actually use it to CUT things. Yea, I will use my knives in defense, IF I HAVE TO. I would much rather flee or use my steel-toes. I am not trained in knife combat, and I have done very little reading on the subject. It takes no training to know how to properly use a kinfe as a TOOL.

I swear, I oughta go stab someone with a Bic pen just to prove that there are better things to worry about than my two 4" pieces of sharpened steel.

End ****ing rant.

Screw the sheeple...(those in Nebraska don't take that literaly):p

I carry my Leek everyday and couldn't care less who sees the flipper in action. ;)

Besides the speed-assist, the leek or any of the other kershaws, SOG's,etc., are no more intimidating than a Carson M16. I can open one of the latter just as quickly as a leek or flash, but discretion is the key, and a 2 handed opening should be used around sheeple as a general rule. Local legislation is the key, but lack of personal discretion is more likely to get you in trouble. After all, who wants a co-worker to testify "Oh yeah, he carried a knife all the time! It was kinda scary the way he just snapped it out...."

Most of your post was very much to the point, the above, on the other hand is out of date. That case was overturned some time ago. read back through your emails from the AKTI. all the best,
