I've been away taking care of a lot of things, and I've spent the past 2 weeks reading he new messages on this board. I've come to the conclusion that many of us including myself are not as as prepared as we might think.

Some of the short comings are that no one seems to be factoring in how other people are going to react, remember the L.A. riots? Hispanics who didn't have an interest in the riots, were rioting. There are quite few people who would use chaos to rape, kill and steal. So, if there was ever another major terrorist attack using unconventional weapons, causing massive panic, what are your chances of getting you and your family out to your safety zone in one piece. I wouldn't even think of going anywhere long distant by foot if there are strangers around. Sooner or later someone going to think that gear that you have on looks a lot better on them than yourself. If bug out location is far away, what are you going to do about gas? The lines for gas maybe miles long since everyone thinking like yourself. The gas station you have always used to get to your bug out location maybe shut down, in which case you are sol.

What if someone gets seriously ill would you know how to handle it? Is your bob divided in such away that if you had to abandon part of it quickly; would you be able to pick up the must have items without missing a beat?

Yes, there are a lot of people who would kill for what most of us would be carrying and being on foot in that kind of mess wouldn't be my first choice. However, we are dealt the cards and have to do what is before us. I am assuming here, but I'd think that most here would have a means of protecting themselves and their families and trust me, in that situation good guys finish last and there is no bartering for you and your families lives. To stay alive, you gotta do what you gotta do and do it with a vengeance if it comes down to that.

We carry an additional 10 gallons of gas. In our loaded pickup, that's another 200+ miles, giving us a range of over 500 miles. If we can't find gas within that range, then the situation is wide spread and it's time to start surviving.

If anyone in my family gets seriously ill that quickly, then we'd have to hit a hospital. But, it'd have to wait until we were out of harms way. For everyday minor medical problems, we have over the counter and prescription meds on hand to help with pain, the runs, vomiting, sprains, infection and so on.

Yes, our gear is designed so that we can drop the expendible gear for traveling lite and still have shelter and the other necessary gear needed to survive.

The most important thing that any one of us can have with us, is our wits. If we panic like the rest of the masses, all is lost. Keep our wits about us and think things through before we act in haste and have a plan that we follow as closely as we can.

We can only do what we can do and in my opinion, we are only pawns in the game of life and survival is not only a matter of the expertise that we carry with us, but there is also a measure of GOD/luck or whatever you care to believe in and rely on.

You've got to layer your kits like you would your clothing. Think of surviving with just a jacket on and your pockets filled, then with a pack, then with a vehicle, etc. The same applies to weapons, tools, etc. Just a BOB won't do for everything. Arrange your house, then truck, then BOB, then you, and vice versa.

All the cool toys in the world won't save your butt without the skill and mental discipline to effectively use them in an emergency. For that reason, I have repeatedly urged people interested in emergency prepardness to A.) Take several tactical handgun courses from a reputable, world class trainer. B.) Get a concealed weapon's license. C.) Obtain a proper concealment rig and learn how to use it. and D.) Train your butt off in order to develop the necessary skills to do the proper thing by reflex.

All of that will take a substantial investment of time, energy and cash. However, if you look at the L.A. riots, the Korean shop keepers with guns were the only folks that weren't dragged into the streets and beaten.

Otherwise, you and your BOB are just going to be a walking "convenience store" to rob at will.

Hopefully, when, not if, the next incident occurs, the masses will respond as they did with the recent power outage.

Regardless, I am prepared. Mentally and physically.

I don't know what race these people were but I remember reading an article where the reporter was asking looters about the trial and some looters did not even know about Rodney King and were just interested in getting free stuff by looting.

There was a fictional story on the web several years ago called the "Gray Ninties" the story was about economic collapse and the preparation that he and a group of friends went through. Gave some insight into this question.

People loot because it is fun. (and you get free stuff)

If you make it un-fun they will un-loot. Mac

A lot of people will break the law for their own benefit if they know they can get away with it.

Take for example, rioting and looting. Mass numbers of normally civilised residents running around breaking shop windows and rushing in to get whatever they can carry.

If the authorities make it quite clear, the price for looting is quite severe and heavy, very few would attempt it.

As for those innocent people caught in the middle, the best thing to do is to stay out of the away and let the lawmen do their jobs.

For emergency and survival purposes, it is always good to make sure your household has all the necessary rations and items to tide you and your family over for at least a week.

All those necessary food, emergency supplies and First Aid stuff should be in stock in adequate quantities. That is not to say, you are praying that an emergency will take place but it's good to know if the unexpected happens, you are prepared and your family will thank you for it.

Obviously! But what do you suggest for the poor souls that cannot get away and get dragged from their homes/vehicles and beaten to death?

The best detterent to a riot is a shotgun. If you can, get a shotgun that can be broken down for easy transport with your BOB or vehicle. My Benelli comes apart at the barrel, and the magazine tube unscrews at the receiver, making it easy to put in a bag and assembled for use in another location if travelling, or if I end up in a bad location. Mobs will normally stop if confronted with a scattergun. If not, shoot the loudest alpha type males. Mobs have leaders like any other group. The police can't protect you in a riot. If you noticed, the Koreans in LA had rifles and shotguns. Those are serious tools for defense.

00' buck and slug can take the fun out of any rioter pretty quick.

That book is now publised as "Patriots:Surviving the Coming Collapse" by John Rawles. A highly recommended read.

I agree about the handgun and shotgun. My 870 with a folding stock is small enough to keep in a gym duffel, but quick enough to get at if neccesary. My two cents...

Does anyone know if any version of this book is still available online? I did a quick search on Google and came up empty.

No, according to Rawles web site the online portions of the book had to be removed due to his publishing agreement. I ordered a copy through my local Barnes and Noble, they got it in within a week for about 20$. Its a little hokey in some places, but definitely worth the read, IMHO.
now if I could just get Dad to give me my copy back....

I agree a shotgun is a great deterrent, I keep an 870 in my truck, breaks down really easy, easy to repair and those guns are everywear so parts shouldnt be hard to find

Yeah man, love my 870 express 12ga. It still has the original 28" barrel and I want to get a shorter barrel for it too. Probably go with the 20" barrel, but I havn't found one that'll accept the remchoke yet.

I got a 20" barrel for mine withuot chokes, its loaded with 00 buckshot anyway so I figured a choke wouldnt do much good

I believe it is still legal in all 50 states to shoot looters on sight. I don't think that has been changed yet. That should make it pretty "Unfun" I would think.
