No perfect knife?

Hi everyone,

We all know there is no perfect knife for every job....witness the replies to newcomers on this forum. The other side of the spectrum is a knife for every job, while this idea does tickle my fancy, it's impractical.

My question is...Aside from duties like cutting wood (where an ax or saw would be more efficient), or heart surgery...

What would be the minimum number of types or styles you would need to get along today comfortably.

I mean for home and personal use, camping, hunting....whatever you do. If you wish to tell what type and why... brands, steels etc...go ahead!

Just curious...

I was thinking about this question today. I usually carry three main knives. My Large Sebbie, a SAK and a Leatherman Wave. I've carried the Leatherman for the longest. and if I had to I could do almost anything I can think of with that little gem.

So honestly I could leave the rest at home if I had to....but I won't.

The SAK is so easy to access that the only thing the Leatherman comes out for is for the pliers.

My perfect working knife collection would include the following:

Battle Mistress
Battle Mistress-E
Chris Reeve Project 1
Chris Reeve Shadow IV
Chris Reeve Sebenza
Benchmade 710HS

These knives would do everything I need my knives to do.

I love all kinds of knives but the combo I carry daily is usually my Spyderco Rescue and a Victorinox or Wenger SAK.
The serrated Rescue only comes out for serious cutting but the SAK can deal with about 98% of all my cutting needs (and I can open a beer or a can of food, and tighten or loosen a screw if need be).

On the Spyderco Forum the gang is trying real hard to get Sal to develope a Spyderco with SAK features. That would be a perfect knife in my opinion.

Good luck,
Allen.

(Never done this before but since I love knives, what the heck)

Been carrying a Leatherman PST for nearly a decede, ever since they became available in Finland. I carry it in a vertical nylon pouch and it's such an integral part of my clothing that I forget it's there. Workwise, it's all I need and more; the pliers and the screwdrivers are the only parts I ever use. But whenever I DON'T have it with me I seem to find a million things I could do with it.

Carrying a blade in a public place (not work or woods) is illegal in these parts but I carry a Delica nevertheless. I'm big and do martial arts so it's really a last stand type of defensive tool (in case someone is sitting on top of me and going for a choke). I prefer not to call it a knife; it's more like an instrument for surgically removing scumbags. I get a thrill out of the delica because it's like a razor with a needle sharp point.

In the wilderness I'll have my trusty old puukko, still considered the ultimate design for an all-purpose edged tool around the camp in these parts.

I have three different modes of carry.

Weekdays: Just the small stuff
1. Leatherman Micra
2. Camillus EDC in 154CM

Weekends at Home: I’m rigged for larger chores that didn’t get done during the week
1. Leatherman Micra
2. Large Sebenza or Benchmade Ares

Weekends and Vacations in the Adirondacks: Large volume of nasty chores
1. Leatherman Wave
2. Serrated Buck 110 in BG-42

MY 2 "perfect" knives are my REKAT Sifu, and my REKAT Carnivour Cub (after "working them over" a little bit with a file and sandpaper

.). They are also 2 of my EDC folders. (My other EDC is my Leatherman Micra.).

'most any ol' thing gets my bm42as. it's a one-hand-opener, and it's just as strong as a fixed blade when open. smaller cutting usually goes to my case trapper (jigged chestnut bone, cv blades), my oldschool orange bucklite, or my spyderco "flat iron folder."
i usually have all of them on me, the last three are usually rotated in and out of position with my other blades.

That's an interesting take on a classic question...

I view my overall knife needs in terms of three functional categories: defense, utility, and survival. Most knives are capable of performing in all of those roles, but to greater and lesser extents. I usually carry more than one to allow for better specialization as well as to provide some redundancy.

I choose different combinations of knives for different balances of features, depending on where I'm going to be and what I expect to be doing.

Most days I like to carry my REKAT Sifu in an inverted kydex belt sheath and something smaller and friendlier, which means almost anything
biggrin.gif
, clipped to my pocket. My favorite companions for the Sifu are a CRK Large Sebenza or a Spyderco Bob Lum Chinese Folder. Those companions are heavy on the utility to balance the Sifu's defensive orientation.

For work I'm limited to a 4" blade, which rules out the Sifu. I try to carry one of my more defensively-oriented folders to compensate, most often the Kershaw Boa, Emerson Commander, or Microtech LCC.

When travelling I put a bit more emphasis on survival. Most of the time I pick the Sebenza or Spyderco Military for those times.

If I'm spending time away from civilization I put on my Bob Dozier Custom fixed blade (5-1/2"). It is also well-designed for defense and utility, but it's a bit large and conspicuous for casual wear. And even though it covers the bases, I generally have a folder in my pocket too.

In addition to covering different functions I generally like to carry at least one knife that is socially acceptible and one that I'm willing to loan out to someone else. A blue Spyderco Ladybug on my keychain serves both purposes.

Finally, I couldn't get by without a multi-tool of some kind, but I don't usually think about that as a knife. I never leave the house without a Leatherman Micra. Most of the time I also have either a Gerber Legend, a Victorinox SwissChamp XLT, or both. I've found that a lot of jobs go quicker with two multi-tools than with just one.

Oh, and I have no real justification for always wearing an Emerson La Griffe, I just like it.

All that exposition and I never did get around to answering the main question.

To cover all of my regular requirements I would need at least:

Bob Dozier Custom (5-1/2" fixed)
REKAT Sifu
Kershaw Ken Onion Boa
CRK Large Sebenza
Spyderco Ladybug

Gerber Legend
Victorinox SwissChamp XLT
Leatherman Micra

If I had to limit myself to a single knife and a single multi-tool it would be either the Boa or the Sebenza and the SwissChamp XLT.

If I could only carry one item I'd give up the stand-alone knives anc carry the Legend, since it has a usable one-hand blade in addition to the tools.

I'll quit blathering now...

My knives!

I really own all I need, carry depends on environment:

weekdays(at school):
Spyderco Ladybug (pocket), on keys
Spyderco Cricket (IWB)
Leatherman Supertool

Camping/Survival:
Meula 4" skinner, acting as a Campknife
Camp saw
Leatherman
Spyderco Delica

Evenings at home:
Delica, right pocket
Ladybug, left pocket on keys
Cricket, IWB
Leatherman Supertool, right side, back

Evening walks:
Delica, right pocket
Cricket, IWB
Ladybug, keys, left pocket
4" tanto, horizontal sheath, small of back

I don't own many good quality knives, but I have one for each task:
6" survival knife
5" skinner, folder
5" bootknife
4" skinner
4" Scorpion II
4" Tanto
3.75" RiverTrail folder
2.875" Delica, plain edge
1.875" Cricket, serrated
1.875" Ladybug, keys
1.875" Ladybug, loosechange knife

3x 4" throwing knives
2x 3" throwing knives
12+ 6" throwing spikes(from 7" nails)

Not much, but I have a use for every knife. There is no perfect knife, and so we have to carry more of them.

Hmm,
Weekdays:
Im usually at school, so no knife for me, in the summer i carry a 3 inch(biggest i can go legally) folder IWB
Weekends: Gerber LST, dont know the exact model, the blade is about 2 inches, its more "politcally correct" if i need to take it out in front of some formal friends for example.
Camping:
Stiff Kiss tanto on my belt
6 inch Ka-Bar on belt, other side
Hunting:
Some old gerber i got a while ago, i forgot the name of it, 3.5 inch blade, nice nylon sheath to keep on my belt
Fishing:
same as hunting
Around the house/our property:
whichever jag i can find, i abouse my knives around here, BM's are too good to carry

if i could pick ONE
frown.gif
and i hate just one knife, it would be my 6 inch Ka-bar, self defense, chop down a tree, skin an animal, ward off an attacker, save the world
biggrin.gif

Being only 15 i dont carry many knives, when im on my property i have at the most, when out in public i just carry my gerber LST. I dont want to get caught with a concealed piece(anything over 3 inches) because i could never owna handgun when i get older

Great! Those last three or four posts were exactly what I was looking for!

Many different jobs or categories, so many knives to choose from. If I had to, I might be able get down to about six...but it would be a stretch.

Keep 'em coming.
