Well, I just shipped out some blades to Bastid yesterday morning after finishing up the last of the knives that I'm taking to Blade to show to some other makers and deliver to a couple buddies. I actually took yesterday off from the shop and didn't even go in there and turn on the light last night, but that break was short lived. Got home from work tonight and couldn't resist any longer. Got a couple blades profiled out for the next batch in 154CM. Two Mini Spear Points coming in at just under 7" overall. The proto seemed to get good reviews so I'm makin' more. Maybe after I get the kids to bed I'll get a few more done.....

I'm addicted to grinding.........and I don't even want to seek treatment:D

These look really good! Any chance I could get one at blade? Thanks Martin
Naked so it would save you time to be with the kids

Everything I will have at Blade with me is spoken for already Martin. This trip is just for show and tell primarily. I need to get some feedback from a few folks to improve my work in the future. These won't be ready for some time, I'm trying to do decent sized batches before sending out to Peters for heat treat.

Thanks for the kind words though.

Here is a picture of the proto that I did a while back

Jon,

Kick back and enjoy yourself at Blade; it will be like a mini vacation.

I am telling you up front, that I am looking for some matting like that in the pic and will use it for my next finished knife pic. The knife is lovely and the picture is awesome.

Regards, Fred

Hey Fred, my background secret.......place mats! I have my wife keep here eye out when she goes to Target or Pier 1 Imports for cool looking place mats. This one is bamboo slats and sticks threaded together.

Placemats are the trick.

I bought a bunch at IKEA, and the bamboo is my favorite.

Now, if only I could take decent pics...

I always enjoy watching your WIP Jonny... good to hear you are going to BLADE. I am going too, this will be my first time at the show. Keep up the WIP;s and the GREAT work

I'll give you some un-qualified appraisal: that finished knife is fantastic! At least from this corner of the internet. Really looks sharp. Makes me wonder what if would feel like in hand. Keep up the good work and I hope you get lots of positive or at least productive input there.

Johhny... i have a question. I notice on your profiles you seem to leave one area by the tip ungrounded to your profile line. Is that to prevent any damage to the tip while actually doing the grind? Or do you use it as a guide to where you want your final grind(height) to stop? And you clean it up before HT? Thanks as always taking the time to answer my questions.

Hey J,
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you like watching my WIP stuff. I learned a lot from watching others post theirs and always enjoyed seeing it as well.

The extra meat at the tip is something I learned from other makers here on BF. When I first started grinding blades, I was having trouble with my tips going thinner than the rest of the blade edge and as a result when I got my edge down to the .020" thickness zone my tips were being ground away a little bit, essentially changing the profile of my original design. Somebody mentioned that your natural tendency when making a pass on the grinder is to pull away at the end of pass, which can cause you to put a bit of extra pressure on the tip just before the blade leaves the belt causing your tip to be ground thinner. Somebody suggested leaving that extra bit at the end. Now in the event that you pull away and put a bit to much pressure at the tip, the extra bit of steel takes the brunt of that pressure leaving the edge in tact. Once I'm done with the bevels, I carefully grind the bump off on the flat platen, finish it to match the rest of the profile and it's off to heat treat.

Ultimately I think the goal should be to learn to make even, clean passes on the grinder, but having that extra bit is a good safeguard against a small mistake that can change the quality of the finished knife.

Hope this helps.

I'm glad that got asked, I was wondering myself. Interesting...

That jigged prototype is sweet. Can't wait to see how that batch turns out!

REALLY NICE Johnny!!! You sure came a long way in a hurry!

I was curious about the "fat tips" too. I know Tod Begg leaves a little nub like that with a hole through it for a hold-down point in machining processes. But I didn't think you had a big, fancy CNC in your shop---YET. ;) :D

Good stuff Johnny! :)

Thanks Nick! LOL, nope, no fancy CNC mill.........yet! ;)

I'm looking forward to some more chatting on wed. but I'll be turning in early since I've got to be out of the house by 4 AM thurs. morning to catch my flight to Atlanta!!

No rest is right, you're working hard! Great looking profiles, keep it up. :D
