No Saw Fires

A few months ago I saw a post here about a "sami" fire. The person who wrote the post said that you could burn a "raw" (by which I assume he meant unseasoned) log in half over a small fire and then push the ends of the log in and feed the fire as needed. He specifically mentioned using one log at a time.

The idea intrigued me, as my least favorite camp chore is sawing firewood. So I tried it on my last camping trip.

I discovered that it didn't work for me with one log. I had to build a good fire with small wood, then place two parallel logs (fallen deadwood trees) across the fire so they could reflect heat back and forth to get them to burn in half. I had to feed small wood in under the logs until they started burning good, but after that, it worked according to plan. The two logs burned in half, so I had 4 ends to feed the fire with.

When I wanted the fire to go out, I just pulled the log halves apart, and had firewood ready for the next day.

I took a picture of the fire but it didn't turn out well. FWIW, here's the photo:

I wonder if using a big rock as a heat reflector would help? I'll try this out next time I'm camping (and fires are allowed).
