I'm assuming you guys will probably chew me out for asking, but i've been looking into purchasing a Busse blade. My question is this. How is it that for a company to ask such a premium price, they make you buy the sheath seperately?

short answer: this allows you to purchase exactly the sheath you want from one of the many custom makers out there and actually cuts down on production costs.

long answer: is much longer.

Cool. I wasn't doggin on Busse. Just curious. Thanks

no problem.

this comes up a couple times a year. nothing wrong with someone unfamiliar with busse's protocols to ask.

older models have come with sheaths. there were nylon, kydex, and leather sheaths included with various knives. they were well made, and some people still collect them.

since most ended up throwing the stock sheaths in a drawer and having one made to their specs, jerry scrapped the sheath idea. and now he no longer has to take up shop space with boxes of sheaths most end up not using or paying a sheath maker to supply him.

How much does a sheath go for from a custom maker. Lets say, Kidex for a 5 inch blade?

depends.

i like okuden for kydex. i think i paid around $65.00 for a badger sheath, but its been a while.

david brown makes very nice kydex sheaths, and his tend to have a bit more "personality" than oku's.

if you like the nylon/kydex insert type, on scene tactical is the way to go for customs. or you could buy a spec ops for around $40 and reshape the insert to fit your knife.

IMHO: Busse Combat is a TOP notch knife maker, not a sheath maker, They produce the BEST knives out there. I would be dissapointed if my Busse knife showed up in some half a$$ed sheath ( like you get from most other knife companies) and as mentioned above it allows you to choose a custom sheath maker to make you a proper sheath. The Bussecombat website has links to some great sheath makers. Chuddybear is another top notch sheath maker with very reasonable prices.:thumbup:

I used to think the same way, except that there are a few busses that I don't have a need for a sheath for and some I want in leather and some in kydex. So I'd rather pay less for the knife and get exactly what I want.

Also, the Bussecompanystore.com usually has sheaths that fit the knives they sell by mashedcat sheaths, or leather ones (forget the maker of those).

I have two mashedcat sheaths I like a lot.

another reason is some of the knives hogs buy, they buy a lot of the same version (think 27 or more...............you know who you are)

Do you really need 27 sheaths for the same knife? think how much extra that 27 would add to the cost, when you never intent to carry all of them at the same time. This allows people to buy a couple sheaths that may cover many versions of the same knife.

just a note, this not me................

but i've been looking into purchasing a Busse blade.

Don't do it! Run while you still have time! If you breath the INFI dust, you will suffer Wauseon Wasting Syndrome, and become like us. Save yourself, and tell the others!

LOL@Lycosa

I like getting a sheath separate. Sometimes I like a leather one. Sometimes I like kydex. Rarely do I like that nylon combat sheath that the old Busse's came with. Sure, I keep them with my old knives, but I don't think they are the end-all be-all of sheaths for Busse's of any generation.

I tuck mine in my pants like Crocodile Dundee
that sounds like a new form of birth control,

....now that i have the INFI addiction i have started making leather sheaths myself, and i do share sheaths (that sounds a bit dirty) between knives, recently i bought a BATACLE and a RAT RC-5, the RAT came with a nice nylon sheath that fit the BATACLE perfectly!, it made me feel like i got the RAT for half price!

I have a couple RAT's, and must say that I really enjoy the excellent bang for the buck, but the only one that came with a sheath worth keeping is the RAT RC-4 (Kydex). The others (izula, RC-3) are injection molded, and while they fit nicely, just seem cheap. I'd rather save the few dollars that is built into the price and not have them included.

I was kind of bummed at first, but learned how to do my own sheaths and discovered a new 'hobby'. It really is quite a bit of fun! and it leaves me with more money to buy INFI... ;)

What, everyone I have purchased has come with a fine sheath. You guys must have pissed someone off. The only problems with the sheaths they come with is that they are not very water resistant and they don't come with Tekloks.

Duct tape my friend! Slap that tek lok to the supplied sheath and wrap said tape around and viola!!! Instant custom sheath!! :D
