I bought a Colt 703 today. It has no shield. From the date codes it looks like it was from the year 2000. Did they not have the Buck shield on the handle? Thanks in advance for your help. Joe

I bought a 703 new in box, off the bay recently.
It is a 2001 with no shield also.
I just assumed it was near the end of the production of that model, and they ran out of shields for them.....
Maybe someone else has the true information....

Yes, that series was winding down by that time and gone by 2002. So, I'm not surprised that shields were removed by 2000. DM

I agree with David about the 700 series winding down with the 703 be phased out in 2002. The shields on the 700 series require a long and detailed explanation, which I won't go into here. There has been an excellent article written for "Knife World" by Larry Oden that I would be glad to send you if you're interested. Email me your information - rustyo3@qwestoffice.net

I would love to read that article!

I'll quote from the article, from pg. 513 in Blades Guides to Knives. " In 1999, Buck started to wind down the run by removing the 704 from the catalog. The 2000 catalog featured the remaining four models in the series with the shields removed. It was likely a cost-saving measure on a series that was declining in sales. In 2001, the 701 was removed from the catalog and by 2002 the remaining models were discontinued." DM
