No-spin seminar with Ralph Thorn

Cool.

I would love to attend a course by him. I have spent some time doing no spin throwing, but am stuck at about 15 feet for the 1/4 spin. Of course, that is with no instruction, and no book, video, etc. Just trying to get it to work my self. I have not done it in a while, as I mostly throw Hawks, but like to combine the two.

Where did you find dates for this seminar? I was in that area recently and would have loved to have attended.

There was also another one in NY the following day. Information was posted on the flying steel facebook page. I met Patrick from flying steel as well. I'm not sure where else the dates were posted, but I think Ralph is due to return sometime in the future.

The place in New York has a waiting list for new students that rotate in as classes graduate to higher levels, so there might be a stream of new students there we could do seminars for. Possibly next July if anyone is interested. Philly might happen again too but I don't know when.

I leave it to each seminar organizer to bring people on board. They pay me a flat rate so I am not motivated to bring more people in, in fact from my point of view smaller groups are better because I can work with people individually much more and get them further along. The seminar sponsors, however, want as many as they can so they can hit the break even point or make money, and of course I want them to make as much money as they can, so it is a balancing act.

Email me off this board to and ask me periodically about seminars. We typically do one per year and they can be anywhere (we've been on both coasts and in the midwest as well. Doing two at the same time is a first. Who knows, according to where you live you might be able to set one up yourself.

The seminar was amazing! I'm hoping there are more in the future. It was an honor to finally meet Ralph Thorn and Ryan Moomaw - and a lot of fun to see them in action. I've finally made some progress with my underhand throw.

Wish they had classes or seminars in my area! I have just been watching lots of vids on youtube but have no clue how to get the knife to stick with the no spin technique. Must be something missing that I can't tell by watching vids. There is nothing like getting hands on instructions.

I too had a hell of a time learning this. Make a video of yourself and post a link as a new thread, or PM me. If you know what your knife is doing (over-spinning, yawing left, or yawing right) then it will help narrow down the problem. It's easier to fix an over-spin than it is to fix a yaw. Make sure you're using a knife that is, at minimum, 3/16" thick and 9" long. Throw into foam (e.g. archery target) - it will take hits that a wood target will deflect. This will help build your confidence and allow you to see what your knives are doing.
