Heh. If you could see the looks on your faces when you saw this topic.

I have a tire strapped to a large tree stake (6' x 3"). It's a great setup for practicing -but- the impact sounds are loud enough to be heard throughout the neighborhood :)

Anyone have any suggestions on dampening the noise a bit?

Hi axolotls -

Long ago I had a similar set-up and like you was concerned with the excessive noise. I used a couple rolls of duct tape which deadens those loud "ring" and "smack" noises. If like me you don’t want to lose that bounce the tire gives, use only one layer of tape. You will of course need to use additional tape as the months go by and you start wearing it out but all in all the tape holds pretty well.

Hope this helps!

i like to put crunched newspaper under the tape on my stick, this will let your stick live longer, and you can use it like an "all purpose stick", its safe for full contact sparring, its heavy for solo practice, and its not to noisy!

tip; roll two sheets the long way and then crunch them up, and fold it over the top of the stick, and then tape. make sure there is no opening in the paper where the stick will go through and tear the tape.

Thanks for the tips. My favorite sticks have a mix of duct and electrical tape from the tip to about 1/4 of the way down (since they cracked). But that softens the noise of the stick.

I put duct tape on the tire. However, it's still pretty loud. I am thinking of lining the inside of the tire with something light. Maybe that spray can foam.
