I was wondering if there are any decent quality, non automatic OTF knives out there. So far, I've only found the Kershaw Ripcord.

You may wish to do a search for gravity knives. There might be more to offer using that description.

Why are gravity knives so illegal?

Like an automatic knife, you can hold one concealed and with an almost imperceptible motion, you've got an open blade available. To a police officer standing right in front of you, speaking to you, this is an uncomfortable situation.

In actuality, something some day got a politician involved and he pushed through a law against it.

Not sure why but I'll guess. I did see "Knife in the Water" by Roman Polanski. A must-see movie for cutlery enthusiasts and those who appreciate the female form. Based upon this show Gravity knives are illegal because they drive older white men (AKA legislators) wild enough to grab them up and throw them into the water! :)

Boker has one that's auto-retract, even cooler than the box cutter Scurvey posted!

The Christy Knife, still manufactured today by family, considered by some to be the tactical/survival knife of its day.

Invented in 1936 by RJ Christy.

The pictured one was carried and used by Col. Harry Skerry, Army Corp. of Engineers, Bataan survivor, RIP.
