Non-Custom Buck 110 with CPM154 or S30V Steel

Hi all,

I have been a long time admirer of the Buck 110 lockblade, ever since I was in the scouts. Unfortunately, school, college, and my career has come in-between me and my knife collecting ventures. I have been rotating a couple Cold Steels, a Benchmade, and a Kershaw as my EDCs for almost five years now.

Although I have never owned a Buck or have much knowledge about them, I think it is about time for me to pick one up, starting with the classic 7.2oz 110.

I have already ordered a Buck 110 with 420HC steel but am looking for one with either CPM154 or S30V steel.

From perusing the forums, I have learned that Cabelas offers one with S30V and BassPro used to offer one with CPM154, but has since been discontinued.

Besides the custom shop and these two offerings, do I have any other option for scoring a Buck 110 with upgraded steel?

I would highly suggest a custom shop 110, they do not cost that much and the knives are spot on. I got a custom shop 110 with S30V blade and smooth water buffalo scales and nickel silver bolsters that is just super nice.

I'd go with RickJ on the Custom shop. You can get a really basic 110 with S30v for less than the Cabela offering. Other than the two you nmentioned I'm not aware of any 110's in the retail market, at this time with premium steel. If you were to join the BCCI there are a couple of models that you could probably get your hands on that would meet your desires but other than that the secondary market/auction sites and the For Sale boards here are your best bet.

Thank you for all the replies! The pricing at the custom shop is just slightly more than the Cabelas 110, this will definitely have to be my fallback option.

The reason I am looking for a non-custom and non-Alaskan Guide is because I really like the original birchwood handle of the classic 110. I would like a nice custom for occasional use and a classic looking Buck 110 with an upgraded blade for EDC.

You need to take into consideration the shipping that you will have to pay for the Cabela's 110. It's $89.95 plus a minimum of $5 shipping and that cheap shipping is dependent on ordering $150 or more. At $91.00 for a custom shop with S30V, leather sheath and free shipping will be less than the Cabela's.

Or.......you could get a nice pre-1981 110 off e-Bay with 440C steel for about $40 and send it back to Buck to have it tuned and polished up to look like new.

They do that for $8 with you paying shipping one way and them paying return.

It's an option, and many would say you'd end up with a better knife that way.

:)

I'm carrying my 2 dot 440c steel 110 everyday right now.I put a brand new in the box 440 c on my belt awhile ago,and can't put it down.LOL

Hi FH92,

welcome to the Buck forum!

If you are in no hurry, I'd say keep your eye on the auction sites and the exchange here at BF. Both the options you are looking at are on those sites often....and sometimes deals can be found (you will have to find us sleeping).

Good to give the guy fair warning, JB.......it is true.

But we DO take naps occasionally.

Could somebody elaborate on the pre-1981 blades and why the 440c is desirable?

Thank you! And yes, I will be hounding the eBay listings for the knife I want. I hope BF will enjoy the new competition ;)

I do not really like the Alaskan Guide stamp on the Cabela's 110. Which is why I inquired about other options for premium steel. I will definitely be pulling the trigger on a custom soon.

The 440C is a desirable steel because it's tough and holds an edge well.

Many people like it better than some of the modern "premium" steels and it holds its own quite well with these steels in actual use.

Since the old 110s are fairly common and can be had cheaper than the ones with the new "premium" steels.......they are a cost-effective alternative to the often overpriced new knives.

As long as you can get the Buck Spa Treatment to make them like new for such a reasonable cost, these older 440C 110s are a smart alternative to the new stuff.

You CAN, of course, find them New in the Box on e-Bay......but unless you are very lucky or a very smart and experienced and hard-working buyer--that will usually cost you MORE than a new one with the "premium" steel. :)

I hate the blades with the gaudy stamps, too.....but these logos CAN be removed, should you decide to go that route.

Another option is wait until the next Web Specials pop up at the Buck site and maybe get lucky and they do a build out 110 in CPM154 or S30V or something similar.

Thank you BG42EDGE for the information on 440C blades.

Is there a customer mailing list for web special updates or should I just check it daily?

No list that I know of, you just gotta check it often. I've done searches here on BF and up until the last year or so Buck seemed to "average" a new batch of web specials about every three months based on the heads up posts in this forum.

Also, you could join the BCCI and get periodic lists from Larry Oden for special, old and collectable Buck knives.

Trolling a common auction site, you may find the recent 110 web special with coated cpm154 and rosewood. They were 30 bucks on the web and have gone up but still good retail price compared to cabelas or custom.

I have a Buck Build Out 110. It has a BOS Heat treated 154cm blade and "dymond wood" handles. They built 100 of them and sold them on the buck web specials. They can still be found from time to time.

This is the one I would watch for. Outstanding version of a 110....especially at the web special price.

I have been watching the rosewood web specials on eBay for a bit now, just wish they were closer to the retail price. Most of them are around $80
