Has anyone here used a metal match made from "Mischalloy" and if so how do you rate it to the standard ferrocium?
Here is where I got them from: http://www.epcamps.com/4in_Flint.html
The next link give a lot of information about "Mischmetal".

I just got 2 of these Mischalloy metal matches and they are 4" long and 1/2" diameter. Big and heavy and they came with a lanyard hole drilled in them with an attached lanyard.

Hoping for some feedback.

In Cody Lundins book, 98.6, he refers to the ferro rods as "mish metal". I wonder if it's the same thing?

Read the link for the Wikiapedia I included. It sounds very close but I don't know if they are EXACTLY the same. I am going to try one out and see how quick they start a cotton ball with PJ.

Well definitely post up a review if you get ahold of it, sounds very interesting!

Well just got back from testing it on a piece of cotton with some PJ in it and it ignited with my second pass over the rod with a stainless Stanley carving knife. Looks like the sparks are just as hot as with ferrocium.

With these bing 1/2" diameter and 4" long they should last for a whole damn bunch of fire starts.

Where did you get them?

Nevermind, read through your first post too fast :)

They are the same thing and I have two of them also and they are great if you want a flint that you really scrape and get millon fires from that is the one. Are they still on 15 dollars? The ones I got 5 or 7 years back were $14.95.
Take care,
Bryan

Hey Guys...

Ron...

I believe that Michmetal and Ferrocerium are interchangable names...
Some call it michmetal, others call it Ferrocerium...

I believe it be all the same thing...

After reading that wikiarticle I won't be complaining about the price of ferro rods. Anybody who can read all that and understand it enough to make me a ferro rod deserves my money. Mac

Mac if it would make you feel better I could buy some ferro rods and sel them to you at a higher price than you pay now. ;)

Yeah, it looks like the Ferrocium and Mischalloy fire steels are made up of a whole lot of different materials. I wonder who came up with the idea in the first place and how did he figure out what alloys to combine to make the firesteels...must have been one smart dude!
