Looking for ideas and examples of non-kydex sheaths for neck-knives, keychain companions, mini-hunters, etc.

I'm open to just about anything.

I have a small knife I'm building and need to conceive of a non-kydex-nor-on-the-belt way to make it portable.

I can think of a few, but like I said, I want to leave the field wide open...

Again = No Kydex.

Thanks,

Dan

try good old leather! Here's a recent project I just completed for a Brusletto Balder, which is a pretty small knife (2" blade):

This particular one was built for pocket carry of course, but I have built similar ones for neck carry. I've been wearing this one for a week now, and it's working very well so far...

Is there a particular reason to not use kydex? (aside from the fact that its a PITA! ;) )

If its just looks, you might make a leather sheath with a kydex liner to aid in retention.

Another thought is leather with a strong (rare earth) magnet embedded inside.

I like this idea, Matt. I'll keep it in mind.

I have made leather-covered kydex sheaths for other knives. In fact, even a fur-covered kydex sheath. I don't want the bulk this time, but at the same time, I don't want bare kydex either. BTW, the covered kydex sheaths I made were all rivetless - they were stiched. I'm not a fan of rivets. :barf: (kydex does make a great liner, though ;) )

Mostly, I'm looking for other materials and ideas for sheaths, scabbards, etc. I need a better design. It needs to be a "dangler", though (no pocket/belt carry).

I know there have got to be other options out there besides the typical necker sheath.

What else ya got?

Maybe you could go with some small wooden sheath with a Japanese-style tsuba release. Even better, you could make one out of micarta for modern/traditional type sheath. :D

Great idea and again, I have examples of this. However, the design of the knife is a bit irregular and doesn't lend itself to tsuba style.

I guess that you could just Superglue a magnet to your chest, and hang the knife there.:D.

For a neck-sheath, I think it's going to be pretty hard to beat one made out of kydex/concealex for retention, safety, and thinness.

I stick a piece of bubble gum on my chest and then stick the blade on that. :p I am making one with Kydex on one side and Ray skin on the other...also thinking about playing with some epoxies/ resins.

Note the Logo on the Clip!

Hey " Pen " i would use Leather but custom mold it for the blade , "Wet Forming " get ahold of me if you would like an explaination.:)

Is there any way you could describe/show us the design of the knife to help us out?

Years ago, I came across a villager who lives in a riverine area. He was carrying a golok on his bicycle. I noticed his golok was kept in a rattan-weaved sheath. That means the golok can be seen through the gaps in the weaved sheath.

I asked the man the reason for such a sheath. His answer was short and simple: "Because it helps the golok to dry easily after being used and rust won't gather."

Perhaps you may want to introduce something like that to your new design. Something that helps the blade to "breathe".
The sheath can be made of tough, coarse material like canvas. The interior reinforced with plastic so that no accidental piercing would take place. :)

leather with a pin lock?
I have a Kenny Rowe shoulder rig for a subhilt fighter, that is held by a pin lock snap. It opens very ergonomically, and hangs upside down.

golok and stripey357 - these are some interesting ideas. Keep 'em coming.

I know I said I had a particular knife in mind, but it's really not one knife, but rather a style of knives I'm developing. I'm afraid if I disclose the style - it will be lead to "preconceived notions" of the type of sheath to use. So, for now, let's keep it open-ended. Who knows, maybe someone has an idea that seems far-fetched but would really work nice...?!?!?

Here are some neat sheath/scabbard ideas:
(ones that I do not want to use, but are neat anyway)

I think a smaller version of this seems like it would work

still looking for new ideas....

You said you didn't want kydex, how about concealex?:)

Seriously though you could try a rawhide sheath.

Or if you are looking for a neat sheath design for a small knife, take a look at Don Cowles sheaths on his website. He is the distributer in the US of William Henry style pocket clips for sheaths, he also incorporates magnets in his sheaths.

Also it has been mentioned on these forums before, that a properly molded leather sheath will have just as much retention as a kydex sheath.

There were some knives in one of the magazines recently with sheaths that looked like they were made out of some type of rubbery material. I can't remember who the maker was or what the knives were called, but I think it they were called cats, or something like that. They came in different colors of the handles of the knives matched the sheaths, and if I remember right the sheaths had a little circular sharpeneing stone embedded in them. Hopefully someone will post and have more info than I can give you.

How about . . .

A knike with a one-sided chisel grind stuck flat-side down to a piece of magnetic stripping. The sharp edge would (in theory) lay flat against the magnet like a CKRT KISS (or whichever one they made like that). The magnetic stripping could be cut to a shape of your liking and suspended by a cord or whatever.

Hoo boy, I'd want strong magnetic stripping though! :D

been done...
