I am looking for a new hunting folder, but I do not like the military style folders. Untill now I used a Gerber EZ Out ATS34. The blade is very good, but after some years of use it doesn't feel as solid as it used to. Do you have any suggestions? I like the Benchmade 690, but I don't know if it's suitable as a hunting knife. Do you have any experiences with the Puma folding hunters?

Hi...

Try to find a Spyderco/Tim Wegner or Tim Wegner Jr..They are discontinued, but you can still find them around.

Another folder thats nice and beefy that would make an excellent hunting type blade although its a defensive blade is the Spyderco/Keating Chinook.. Lots of belly on the knife..

Either or are very High quality knives..

I, too, like the Wegner - particularly the Wegner Jr.. But if you require a thicker grip (for gloved hands) than most tacticals offer, consider the Gerber Gator. And it's available in ATS34.

kjmeijer, Take a look on the "Buck" forums here and you can see pictures of some of the "custom" 110's that folks have ordered. You can order the classic Buck 110 with your choice of blade steels and handle materials off of Buck's Petes custom knife shop. I have one I ordered from there and it is handsome and solid as well as non tactical. I have one of the smaller Puma folders and it is a well built classic style folder as well.

The Spyderco Wegners are hard to beat. If you check around, some of the Internet knife sale sites could probably fix you up. I really like mine, especially the smaller one.

The PUMA lockbacks are good knives as well. I found the blade steel to perform better then the comparable Buck you get from Wal-Mart or some other mass marketer. The cut out for the 'clip' seems a little excessive to me. It makes for great piercing but, there just isn't enough blade left up front for mundane things like spreading cream cheese or peanut butter.

A Buck 110 with a BG-42 blade, whether a Master Series or one of the BG-42 incarnations, is another great choice. It certainly will appear more sporting to the 'sheeple' then just about any other knife. The Buck 110 is a legendary blade along the lines of the classic Swiss Army Knife.

I've only had one Puma lock back folder and was disapointed with the lock being too easy to disengage. If I were looking for a good hunting knife I'd get either a Spyderco Wenger or a Victorinox locking Hunter(which I have and use).Just My 2 cents.tom.

Have a look at the Outdoor Edge line. They offer an ecellent value for the dollar spent.
Take a good hard look at the Magna they offer. I've owned two and find them to be a very
good hunting / utlity knife. In fact I'd have to say that The Buck 110 for a lockback & the
Outdoor Edge Magna for the linerlock. Both are excellent values for the workingman's
dollar. Neither will ever fail you in the field.
