Well, it looks like Aldo is out of his non-moly L6 on temporally permanent basis, but I have found some round bar with one of the big tool steel suppliers as outrageous prices. :D Do any of you have HT data for this type of steel? IIRC, at least one four mite used the stuff to make some small integrals hawks a couple of years back.

Sounds like Carpenter's version of L6......I've used it, before I obtained Crucible's...…..biggest difference
is that Carpenter's L6 will soften a bit more on tempering....

Yes. .7 C 1.4Ni about .5 Cr and .65 Mn. Very much like the Carpenter R.D.S specs. Maybe a tad lower in carbon tha Carpenter, but higher than the listed specs for the Bestar version. They say theirs is around .55C. I would think that the "softer" temper would be desirable in the applications that we have discussed in the past.

What's the price on that stuff? Most suppliers seem to be pretty proud of their L6 no matter what the form. The round bar seems to be priced about like the more expensive flat stuff was a few years back.
I just talked to a supplier today about ordering crucible L6

SD Metals has their version, w / Moly.....looks like Crucibles....

The Carpenter version would work as well....maybe a bit better for cladding w/a harder core.
Yes it is pricey....one supplier quoted what I hoped was a mistake.....1 ft of 1" round...for $85.00 (?)…
My previous supplier (Advantage Tool Steel) can no longer source L6.....

Hudson will sell you the moly free round stuff for like $8.40 a pound, which would be like $25 base piece for that 1 x 12 bar, but you have $10 cut charges, packing/shipping. penalties for delivery to residential addresses, etc. I remember a few years guys saying that flat was that much but they were getting round Crucible stuff for like $3.50 a pound.

I’ll tell you tomorrow when I call back. It’s all round stock. I’ll update after I get some hard info

I thought that they were an independent that also sold Carpenter stuff. They are or were a Crucilble service center, at least before the bankruptcy IIRC. Niagra is doing the Crucible production/distribution work, aren't they?

The salesperson I spoke to today said they were basically crucible with a name change..their website says they formed in 2010 after the acquisition of the sssets of crucible Service Centers . The L6 they list for sale is the exact chemistry as champaloy.

Crucible had a lot of assets that went different directions, including the research facility and the service centers.

I bought my 375 or so pounds of CRV from them prior to 2010. After they went independent, they picked up the Carpenter line too. I remember talking to them about XHP and PSF27 at the Dallas knife show in like 2012 or so. I know that the Carpenter non-moly L6 is the R.D.S. but don't they also have another blend that is closer to the Crucible Champaloy?

They told me it was champaloy. At least what I ordered. I asked them point blank “is this the same thing as champaloy?” And I was told yes.though I asked for champaloy so I’m not sure what other blends they offer
The top pic is off crucibles old site, the bottom pic is off SB site
