non-reversing disc grinder?

I have an old craftsman wood lathe and the thing I pretty much shot. I have a 9" disc for it, it has a 1725rpm 1/2 hp motor and step pullies that work fine. Would it be feasable to use it for knives without being reversable? I know grinding one bevel will be fine, but the other one would be done upside down. Has anyone ever done this? Or is there a way to reverse the motor by switch or something?

You can put a reversing drum switch on it,-make sure its a reversible motor first-
most are. Ken.

What would I look for to see if it is reversable? Is it as simple as it saying reversable on the data label? The lathe is at my fathers house so next time I'm there ill take a closer look and some quick pics.

Well do any of you experts think this will work for reversing an A/C motor? I have used it on small D/C motors just fine, but don't know enough about A/C current or motors.

Since I have step pulies I don't care about an electronic speed control. If I could add a switch in-line to reverse the motor that would be awesome! I also have a Dayton 1hp 3450rpm 1ph motor and I could swap it out if the craftsman motor doesn't work.

Any help would be great! I love working with files, but even Noah would of loved a power saw.

That isn't how AC motors reverse.

The plate may say "Reversible". If not, look under the cover plate and you will see the contacts. There should be two wiring diagrams marked CW and CCW. If it has that, it is reversible. Put in a DPDT switch that will switch the power from the CW contacts to the CCW contacts.
