I have read the Spyderco book and been a fan of Spyderco's for a long time and there has been a question in my head I just have to ask that I don't remember being answered in the Spyderco book and I have not seen posted before.
Sal have you ever made your own knives? as in a Sal Glesser custom? not a Spyderco knife but a Sal knife?

Seems like this would be a holy grail of knives in the knife collecting world. Anyone else know the answer to this?

If Sal has, I want one for my collection!

Hi NGK, interesting question. I have made out couple of fixed blades. I have a Tim Zowada gas forge set up at my home, Lttle Giant, etc. Besides dabbling and just banging steel, I've forged two pieces, a drop point and a Bowie. My wife, Gail grabbed them right up.

I have hoped to make some time to build a few knives a year. Current busines time demands are too great. We're still refining after the last re-structure.

If 2004 finds the business sorted, I'll get back into it. I did make my first mosaic damascus billet (a buffalo) at Ed Schempp's hammer in a couple of months ago. Great fun. I brought a few tiles home for my family, Ed Schempp has the rest of the billet.

I figured with knives running through your blood, you would have bound to have made one or two. Cool news, now we just need to see some of your work! I hope time allows you to do more.

Errrr... Poppa Spyder, would kindly post a pix of your masterpiece when its done? *heh-heh!*

Popa smurf... I'll buy one off yah. Be worth something to have one done by you, even if it just sits in a display.

Heres an idea.Sal how about makeing one a year to run a contest on New Years day for a giveaway.Nothing fancy maybe just a neck knife.

Now this sounds like a very good idea! :D

I was sure that a knifeman like Mr. Glesser couldn't stand not to take some steel and shape it himself!
Now if we could only see some of his pieces...

This is what prompted me to ask the intial question, I just new Mr. Glesser had to of done it!

The next question is: Have you ever made one on the basis of what later turned into a production Spyderco in some form or another? Like you made one and liked it enough to pursue it more and it ended up being a production.

I would think this would be a good way to "feel out" a idea for the next Spyderco knife. I know if I were in Sal's shoes I couldnt resist having access to the equipment and materials and not do anything with them, of course what I did with them would come out looking like a monkey on crack was doing it.

Hope I didn't open up a can of worms here Mr. Glesser, But if you should decide to give one away rememeber I was the 1st to ask :)
