Nonsense in Wichita

Apparently, the Kershaw Chive is a "deadly weapon" that is illegal to possess in Wichita. A guy going into City hall to pay a parking ticket had a knife in his pocket, and asked them to hold it at the security check. It fell on the ground, popped open, and after he got back from paying the ticket they arested him, put in in handcuffs and took him away.

See here for the post with the description of what happened.

A pretty sad statement about the our knife laws.

It's tough to say, since we're hearing the accused's side only.

I'm sure not calling him a liar, but it would be interesting to hear the other side of the story. After all, someone made the call.

That said, he probably could have better argued his entire case right there with whomever was sent to arrest him, but it appears he didn't know the law any better than the officer and went along with it. A shame.

FWIW- I have a Kershaw Chive and can understand how it could pop open if it was dropped and fell on the opening stud if the safety was not in place. I have tightened the screw on the safety just to make sure it doesn't open when it shouldn't.

It really is absurd ad a little worrying... I own one of those knives and was asked by a deputy if they were legal. My response was it's sold at WalMart so it must be, and that was good enough for him. But what if he hadn't accepted that answer? Needless to say I don't carry that knife with me anymore.

It can be legal own something, but not to carry it. Firearms are a case in point. You can buy a shotgun at Wal-Mart and be perfectly legal in owning it, but you cannot load it and walk down the middle of Peachtree St. in Downtown Atlanta with it, legally. You can't walk into a bank with it, loaded or empty.

It is up to the individual to know the local laws. The guy messed up. Are these laws stupid? Absolutely! Can you beat them? Under normal circumstances, probably not.

There is a case going before the Supreme Court that may decide the 2nd Amendment application once and for all. It involves firearms, but will effect knife laws as well. It's about the Washington DC Gun Ban. Cross your fingers everyone!
