Hi! Intro and then a request for starting youtubes / faqs to read beyond just the pinned topics here - or any advice folks have given the details below. Hope you're all having a great christmas :P

We have 17 folders, a variety of blenheim, henckel and korin kitchen knives and a wood shop of chisels hand saws and whittling tools. Looking to sharpen only for myself. A variety of steels - d2, m390, vg10, sv35, etc on the folders - and carbon on the knives. A variety of edge grinds, including true chisel, japanese offset, etc, and blade grinds, wharncliff, tanto, spear point, drop point, etc.

Have ordered a Tsprof ks03 on the basis of various chats online, but mostly figure I can just get started and move it on if it doesnt work out for me.

Ordered... 60x LED Pocket Microscope, Pocket Magnifier 40x, TSPROF Double Clamp, TSPROF Single Clamp, Reinforced Springs for Single Clamp, Reinforced Springs for Double Clamp,
K03 Body with main units, The Narrow Abrasive Holder. Lightweight, Stand, Small Universal Table 20 Mm, Stone Leveling Kit

Already have a Klein angle cube which is +/-0.2 at angles off 0/90/180, which I imagine is accurate enough

Going to gritomatic for consumables....
Venev ursus double sided stones - 0.6" wide - and I think I can use without blanks?
  • F80 + F150
  • F240 + F400 OCB
  • F800 OCB + F1200 OCB
Is it worth getting lapping films, say, 2000 / 3000 grit and some glass blanks for them?

I'll also get 3 cowhide narrow strops, so I can use different pastes on them if necessary.
I guess a roll to store the stones so they stay clean

Think thats it. Anything I'm missing? Any KS03 parts or consumables I need?

Cheers all!

Matt

I use a Wicked Edge WE130 and know nothing about the Tsprof, but I like using lapping films myself. Good luck!

Thanks ;p I dont think the tsprof is entirely dissimilar, the main changes seem to be standard stones & doesnt have the double arm 'no need to flip the blade' benefit of the WE.

any advice you have for a noob? or just 'get cheap knives, dont eff it up' ? ;p

It's always good advice to practice on cheaper knives. The diamond lapping films don't seem to need the break-in time like the diamond stones need. I haven't used them alot since I rarely sharpen a blade to more than 1000 grit. I usually only polish bevels on blades that I want to collect, or kitchen knives.
But as a test, I sharpened a paring knife to just 1000 grit a couple of months ago for the girls, and they haven't brought it back to me yet. And they use that knife every time they cook. It is a $7 Victorinox, and they love it!

If your wanting to sharpen wood chisels with it, You probably will need the scissor attachment.

I sharpen chisels and wood carving knives freehand on bench stones, used to use an eclipse type roller guide for chisels. You want to vary the angle some, and have different tools dedicated to hardwoods and soft woods.

Not familiar with the guided system you mentioned, but for handsaws you want a saw vise and some feather files. Some saws, a chainsaw filing guide with a extra slim taper triangle file will fit, or a long feather if the guide will mount it (or modify the guide to mount it). Saw filing is it’s own specialized thing.

You can use the Venev double sided stones without blanks.

Don't bother with lapping films they cost to much for how much use you get out of them, get Gunny Juice emulsion that's what I use and it's by far the fastest cutting emulsion.

I use Gunny Juice on Basswood strops that I made up myself and you can to by getting a few spare blanks and getting the Basswood from hobbylobby which is really good quality and dirt cheap and it is more durable then leather.

The Basswood I use is already 1 inch wide and 1/8th thick all you need to do is cut it to length and glue it down with 3M 77 spray glue.

I can't send you a link to the Basswood on hobbylobby as this forum won't allow it,if you email me @ wadenorton2008@yahoo.ca and just title the email Basswood I'll reply to it.
